GWM Tank 300 vs Toyota Fortuner vs Ford Everest: Here's our winner

It's a rumble in the gravel pit again, we're pitting the new but capable Tank 300 versus some of the old guard, the Fortuner and the Everest.

GWM has been slowly impressing the broader public with its Tank sub-brand. Luxury yet capable of the rough stuff is Tank's aim here, and they kick things off with the 300. We recently received the diesel powerplant South Africans have been hungering for, and it fits the 300 so well compared to the still potent petrol and hybrid powertrains. What happens, though, when we compare a diesel Tank 300 to old guard leisure 4x4s such as the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest? Let's compare the trio.

The Tank 300 is favourable, with greater engine outputs and fuel consumption just 0.1 litres off the Fortuner. Despite the Fortuner and Everest being 7-seater SUVs, let's see how they compare to the Tank 300 on the rough stuff.

Toyota Fortuner

It's a hard decision to make here, and it largely depends on what you're going to use the vehicle for. The Tank 300 is competent off-road from the above specs, but the Fortuner and Everest are no slouches in that regard. I'll have to call it a tie between the Tank 300 and the Fortuner. The Tank 300 wins in price, but the Fortuner has 2 extra seats for not much more money and with a similar engine. The Tank 300 off-road has better approach and departure angles, but the Fortuner has better ground clearance and breakover angle. See why I say it's hard to decide?
