Four neat aftermarket extras for a used BMW X4 

We’re not talking about the major things here, mind you: you can’t fit an OEM (factory-installed) panoramic sunroof to an older X4, for instance, and you will need a huge pile of money to upgrade the basic infotainment system to the top-spec big-screen one (if you can find a dealership willing to even tackle that job, that is). But there are a number of other, smaller upgrades with which your local dealership will be more than happy to assist.

1. M Sport styling add-ons

Even if you start off with a base-trim X4, BMW offers a wide selection of body styling bits to make it look quite a lot nicer. These add-ons range from more-aggressive front- and rear bumpers (and matching side skirts) to blacked-out trim pieces and carbon fibre door mirror caps. 

Making a careful selection from the assortment of retrofit goodies can change the appearance even a very basic X4 xDrive20i to something that mimics an X4 M40i – as shown by our lead image of a test car which was given exactly this treatment. You can even de-badge it, so nobody will need to know that there’s an entry-level X4 under those fancy appearance flourishes...

3. Roof rails and crossbars with assorted carriers

We’re showing a BMW-approved roof box in these illustrations, but you can also employ the roof rails and matching crossbars to mount a bicycle rack or fishing rods – or whichever other outdoor activity takes your fancy. They’re designed to fit into the X4’s standard roof mounting points, and can be easily installed and removed as needed in your garage, as and when you need their added functionality.
