Ford Mustang celebrates 56th birthday and global sales success
On April the 17th, the iconic pony car from Ford celebrated its 56th birthday. But Ford has another reason to party: The Mustang was the world's best-selling sports car in 2019, and is also the global best-selling sports coupé for the fifth consecutive year.
Ford has sold a whopping 633 000 units in 146 countries since sixth-gen Mustang global exports took off in 2015. These include the worldwide sale of 102 090 Mustangs in 2019 alone.
South Africans can't get enough of this all-American muscle car either. Locally, 2 934 Mustangs have been sold up until March 2020, affording this motoring icon a 69% segment share. In plain English: The Mustang continues to outsell all other sports cars in South Africa. Another reason for its popularity is its starting price of R 809 200 for the Ford Mustang 2.3T Fastback. (The Mustang can also be had in convertible guise, for that young-and-reckless feeling.)
The local Mustang engine line-up comprises the 5.0-litre V8 and 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The special Edition Mustang Bullitt (R 1 647 900) is one of the last available manual V8 models on the market today.
