Is the smart forfour a good car?

The smart forfour for all intents and purposes is Mercedes Benz's answer to BMW's MINI but in this instance, the smart brand offerings were actually mini in size. If the very compact design is not a hurdle, this vehicle should prove a good car to those looking for a daily run around.

Who is the smart forfour a good car for?

The forfour is a good car for someone who wants a small form-factor car but is very much into the aesthetics and design of the vehicle. Ideally, it's better for couples and singles rather than families.

Is the smart forfour a good first car?

Due to the size and frugality of the smart forfour, it would make for a good first car. The only potential issue would be the service and maintenance of the vehicle due to it not being sold in South Africa anymore and considering the premium build quality of the vehicle, it could prove costly to service.

Is the smart forfour a good family car?

While the smart forfour can fit four people comfortably, due to its small stature and limited luggage capacity of 185 litres, it's not exactly good for families. This is geared more to be a city runabout of individuals or couples.

Is there a Hybrid smart forfour?

There was no hybrid version of the smart forfour sold in South Africa.

What’s it like to drive?

Reviewer's opinion

"The Smart’s biggest drawcard (apart from its vibrant and characterful design), has to be how easily pilotable it is. The ForTwo’s turning circle is miniscule and I can imagine it slotting into spots in the inner-city that are out of bound for most cars. But if you’re heading to your favourite wine farm for the day and the South-Easter is blowing at its full capacity, do you really want to be in a Smart ForTwo? I’d rather pay a little bit more and get the ForFour. It’s only slightly longer and can also do a pirouette on a postcard."

What does it look like?

Exterior

Interior

What is the smart forfour like inside?

The smart forfour interior design is quite circular with very few sharp edges, however, smart has incorporated vibrant trim colours to add a bit of contrast. Being a compact vehicle, while the forfour will accommodate four adults, seating will be quite snug and larger individuals will ask for more leg- and shoulder room, especially at the rear.

Style

The rounded-off circular shape language of the smart forfour also spreads to the exterior of the vehicle but at the same time has a confident stance with short front and rear overhangs. The design of the car is chic and the proportions are good for the overall size and style. Customers can find two-tone colours for the exterior with muted and vibrant options.

Tech features

  • LED Daytime Running Lights
  • Cruise Control with limiter
  • Central locking with radio remote control
  • Crosswind assist
  • JBL Sound system
