With soaring petrol costs, South African motorists took to the diesel offerings from motor manufacturers very quickly. Low-down torque and performance with long travel times between visits to the pumps are the main reasons for diesel cars' popularity.

Diesel may be cheaper and more efficient to run, but with worldwide emission standards tightening and many city centres banning the use of diesels, we may just have to cut our love affair with diesel short and start looking towards electric and hybrid vehicles as the next big replacement in South Africa.
