The Price Rating feature is AutoTrader’s latest innovation to their digital platform. It uses live market data to provide users with accurate and transparent pricing information for the majority of cars listed on AutoTrader. It uses a complex machine-learning algorithm that takes into account various factors like the make and model of the car, its age, mileage, and condition, to provide a rating for the car's price.
This technology follows other AutoTrader innovations such as Instant Offer, which allows you to sell your car both quickly and easily, as well as our monthly instalment calculator, which effortlessly allows you to predict your potential mobility costs.
About our Price Ratings
Each car is then assigned one of five possible badges:
Low Price
We recommend you take a closer look. This car is priced much lower than the market average.
Great Price
This car is priced below the market average.
Fair Price
This car is priced in line with or slightly above the market average.
High Price
Compared to similar cars this car is priced higher than the market average.
This car is not necessarily a bad deal. There are valid reasons why a car could show a "high price" rating:
- The car is in exceedingly good condition.
- Highly sought-after cars with limited stock availability.
- Additional benefits such as optional extras, special features and/or upgrades to the car.
- Value-add products such as extended warranties.
However, every now and again, the car is just as you would expect it to be and is simply listed above the current market average. We recommend carefully reading the description or calling the dealer to find out more.
No Rating
We are unable to compare this car to the rest of the market.
- Not enough data to compare this vehicle to the market.
- The car was listed more than 2 years ago.
- Cars older than 10 years.
- Priced under R50 000 or over R1 500 000.
- Cars with mileage over 500 000 km.
- New cars.
- Imported and rare cars.
How we do the math
Every day we combine and analyse data from millions of vehicles. We use this data to work out a car's current market price taking into account things like make, model, year, mileage, fuel type and optional extras.
The following is not included but may affect the car's price:
- Condition and colour of the car.
- Service history.
- Number of owners.
- Special modifications.
- Additional services, warranties, admin fees and finance deals.
- Supply and demand.
Our Price Ratings are intended to provide shopping guidance but are not a guarantee of value.
