One of the many reasons cited for buying an SUV is the South African pastime of the roadtrip but are these larger vehicles truly better for a long journey?
Performance
The majority of SUVs will have an engine and drivetrain that is suited to the approximate size of the vehicle. This means that you are going to get an engine that is matched to the size and weight of the car so that you are going to get the best fuel economy on a long road trip. There are a few exceptions to the rule with some vehicles having overly large engines that will cost you a pretty penny if you choose to do a long trip with them.
Space
Long journeys and luggage go hand in hand so a relatively large load area is a must. The majority of SUVs have large packing areas exceeding 500l, so you will have plenty of space for all the kit that your family is sure to pack.
Comfort and Convenience
When you have passengers on a long trip, comfort is a top priority, Most SUVs will have a rather roomy interior with a number of smaller storage spaces for personal items. You will also get multiple USB and 12v charging parts for devices as well as legroom and shoulder room to ensure none ends up with compartment syndrome.
Safety
SUVs will also tend to have a higher safety rating, with many having 7 or more airbags. ISOfix for children car seats, driver assistance systems and a generally higher vantage point for the driver make an SUV a safer road trip vehicle.
Verdict
For all the above reasons an SUV is ideally suited for long journeys.Other types of vehicles may offer a few of these options but you always end up sacrificing one of them. So if you want to enjoy your next roadtrip take an SUV!
