Are BMW 2 Series front wheel drive?

BMW is well known for creating powerful rear-wheel driven models, however, recently have even made the popular 1 Series front-wheel drive. In this article, we look at which BMW 2 Series derivatives are front-wheel drive and which are rear-wheel driven.

There are many reasons why a front-wheel drive configuration is great, however, there are plenty of reasons why rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive systems should be better. For instance, in wet or slippery conditions, front-wheel-driven vehicles have better traction due to the weight of the engine and transmission being over the driven wheels.

However, for the same reason, front-wheel-driven vehicles tend to experience more understeer in corners. Another positive for front-wheel-driven vehicles is that they tend to return a lower fuel consumption figure as the engine and drivetrain are more compact, needs fewer components and result in a lighter vehicle overall.

But if frugality is not important to you, instead you are looking for a vehicle with a more sporty driving dynamic, front-wheel-driven cars might not be what you are looking for, as acceleration tends to be slower and the configuration sometimes produces what is called torque-steer, which is when the vehicle veers left or right under hard acceleration.

Depending on how much you are willing to pay, the BMW 2 Series range has it all; front, rear and all-wheel-drive systems. Let us take a look at which variants have which drivetrain configuration before you get an Instant Offer on your current vehicle and search for new or used BMW 2 Series models on AutoTrader.
