This week we spoke to Gary Herbert, Dealer Principal from Hyundai Sandton to get his 5 top tips for anyone looking to buy a used car.

Buying a Car

1. When is the best time to buy a used car?

“I think it all depends on the type of stock you have but I mean everywhere in the world, the best time to buy a used car is always the last week of the month. This is because that is when everybody is pushing to get to a target, it's the best time to make a deal. So I would say the best time to buy a used car is the last week of any month.” said Gary.

2. How much mileage is too high for purchasing a used car?

“It varies, I would say 100,000 km. I personally try to not stock any cars that have done over 100,000 km, it still has to be within the factory warranty. This would be the first start and then it obviously depends on vehicle to vehicle.”

3. Is mileage more important than age, or is age more important than mileage when purchasing a used car?

“I think it's a combination of both, but I will say that the history of the vehicle is vital. Does it have a full factory service history? Is it an accident free motor car? Is it a good clean car? So it's a combination of all three of those factors: the mileage for the year and the history that is most important.”

4. Is it true that it’s cheaper to buy a car with cash?

“No, not for me. Because if I have the right stock units and the vehicle has a good history and the mileage is correct for the year and I'm confident in selling that car, then there wouldn't be a cheaper price for cash. Reason being is if you finance it through one of the banks or buy it cash, it doesn't make much of a difference, as either way the dealership is going to get paid.”

5. What are your final tips for anyone looking to buy a used car in Sandton?

“The most important thing for the customer when you're buying a used car is to make sure that the history of that vehicle is correct, as that is going to dictate whether you're going to have any future problems, try to make sure that it is an accident free car and also, buy your used car from a reputable dealership.''
