5 Things You Need To Know When Buying Used Cars For Sale In Gauteng
This week we spoke to Ryan Dealer Principal from Mahindra East Rand in Gauteng to get his 5 top tips for anyone looking to buy a used car.
1. When is the best time to buy a used car?
Ryan - “All the time, there isn't necessarily the best time in the year, it doesn't matter when you're looking to buy a used car, all year round is a good time, it's a vehicle that has lost its initial depreciation, and you can always find a bargain, there is always a used car to fit the person's needs.”
2. How many kilometers is too high for a used car?
“I don't think there should be a limit on what is high and low mileage, I think year models should dictate mileage and should not be excessive but if a vehicle has been looked after, there is a good full-service history, and it's been to workshops and had 101 checks or 125 point checks, mileage shouldn't be a definitive factor, you shouldn't see it as a drawback.”
3. Is mileage more important than age, or is age more important than mileage when purchasing a used car?
“I would say when you're purchasing a used car you need to look at the customer's needs, what is the financial budget, is he or she going to be doing high mileage? If yes, in that case, I would advise a low mileage car to give the client a car that's suitable for their application.
4. Is it true that it’s cheaper to buy a car with cash?
“We as dealers don't make that much money on cash deals and of course we earn money when we finance with the bank. We don't like to discount cars because we have spent a lot of money in preparing these vehicles to make sure they are to a certain standard within the motor industry and the used goods act, we would be losing money by selling the car cheaper as a lot of resources has gone into making it dealership standard, we believe what you are buying is value for money.
Of course from a dealership point of view, we have a six-month unlimited mileage warranty for customer peace of mind, and so we don't have to drive to discount a car for cash as well.”
5. What are your final tips for anyone looking to buy a used car in Gauteng?
“Don't impulse buy, go to your dealers and test drive your vehicle so that you don't have buyers remorse. Make sure that your salesman, finance and insurance managers have structured a deal that suits your financial need, so you don't get into financial trouble or problems in the future.
Make sure you inspect the vehicles warranty and paperwork, make sure everything is disclosed to you about the vehicle. Create a needs list and make sure you tick all your boxes.
Make sure the dealership is reputable, that they have workshops on-site, I think the car you're wanting to buy should go through a minimum 101 point check at the workshop and any damage should be reported and given to the client and of course had them rectified and repaired to let the client know the problems that have been found have been fixed and paid to the client.”
