This week we spoke to Collin Laubscher, Sales Manager from Star Nissan Vereeniging to get his 5 top tips for anyone looking to buy a new car.
1. When is the best time to buy a new car?
Colin - “ That depends on what the customers want, if they're looking for the best deal I would say they should buy around the financial year-end, that's the seasonal time when there are more deals ”.
2. Should a customer haggle the price?
“Well, nowadays customers haggle more on new car prices than used cars prices for the pure simple fact that a lot of dealers are within a 40km radius from each other, so customers can get a quote on a car from 10 dealers in 5 minutes.”
3. What’s cheaper diesel or petrol?
“That depends on the customer. If a customer drives a lot of mileage on a monthly basis then a diesel vehicle is the better option to run because your gas mileage is higher, but if you do low mileage then diesel cars will be more expensive for you so you have to do a lot of mileage to make up the difference in price, so it would be best to get a petrol car”.
4. Is it true that it’s cheaper to buy a car with cash?
“No, that is something that has completely changed in the market, since banks give incentives to the OEMs to get the finances through, there are bigger discounts and rebates available if you do vehicle finance and them extra rebates available can be pushed onto the customer if the customer buys cash there's no finance number and the discount is less, the market has definitely changed. That thing about cash is king isn't really true anymore. ”
5. Should you buy any optional extras for your new car?
“Well optional extras are always nice to have however in the African market, extras don't necessarily add value to the vehicle, when it comes to trade values they don't really look at accessories, it’s not going to earn you any extra money back. Accessories are more of an emotional purchase, people get it because they wanted to not because it benefits the value of the car. If you really want them then yes go ahead and buy them, but it won't add any value afterwards.”.
