With a massive shift from sedans to SUVs within the past decade, South African car buyers have certainly made manufactures aware of their new penchant for high-riding, more off-road bias vehicles. Take the Mercedes-Benz GLC, which is the brand's C-Class SUV of sorts. This means that it competes with the locally-produced BMW X3, Audi's Q5, the Volvo XC60, the Jaguar F-Pace and the Porsche Macan.
This makes the segment in which the GLC competes in one of the toughest within the market. In this article, we have selected the base model diesel GLC. The GLC 220d features brilliant 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine with 143 kW and 400 N.m of torque which is paired with a nine-speed automatic gearbox and an all-wheel drive system.

The options and their prices
1. AMG Line Exterieur- R40 000:
Although the GLC is an SUV, the addition of an AMG exterior package simply transforms it to something sporty with far more kerb appeal. Included in the price of the AMG exterior package is a Sports suspension which improves the handling of the GLC but firms-up its ride quality. The firmer ride quality can be offset somewhat by the Dynamic Select system which allows you to choose between comfort and sporty driving settings. Visually, the package adds the AMG body styling with more aggressive front and rear bumpers while the Exterior Chrome package adds a more premium exterior aesthetic.
2. AMG Line Interior- R17 000:
Once you've specified your AMG Line on the exterior of the GLC, the AMG treatment inside would make for a more pleasing package. The AMG Line interior includes ARTICO man-made leather in black, a double cup holder, aluminium trim, an interior light package as well as AMG floor mats.
3. 20-inch AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels- R 19 600:
There are multiple wheel options available in the GLC range, however, after test fitting all of the sets available, we feel that these match our AMG Line model best.
4. Driving Assistance Package- R 36 200:
This system includes the Distronic Plus and Pre-safe systems, essentially providing autonomous cruise control and predictive technology that will have the car apply the brakes should its predict a collision. One problem that we noted with this package is what the brand states as "Required change of configuration" which in the case of this package requires the addition of the Mirror Package, Traffic Sign Assist and Hard-Disc Navigation, meaning that the package costs R60 200 in total.
5. All-digital Instrument display-R12 800:
The 12.3-inch fully digitised instrument cluster provides a high-resolution display that can be customised by choosing between 'Progressive', 'Sporty', and 'Sporty' which alters the look of the cluster dramatically.
