1. Toyota 86

The Toyota 86 and its twin, the Subaru BRZ, are excellent choices for South African driving enthusiasts. Their reliability is legendary and spare parts are readily available, and the cars are relatively simple to maintain, keeping costs down. Search here for Toyota 86 models.

(Minted? Also look into the newer GR86.)

2. Mazda MX-5

The Mazda MX-5 (seen here is the third-generation model) is another solid option. Both the NC (pictured) and ND generations offer a great balance of performance and reliability. While parts might be slightly pricier compared to the 86/BRZ, the overall ownership experience is still positive.

Here's everything you need to know about the Mazda MX-5 which offers useful buying advice by Chad Lückhoff, MX-5 owner and aficionado.

3. Ford Fiesta ST

Ford's 3-door Ford Fiesta ST (read more about the 2015 model here) is a hoot to drive but doesn't waste petrol, affording the owner the best of both worlds. Enthusiasts may have driven this car quite hard, as with any sports car, so ensure you give it a thorough inspection or let someone else check it out properly. 4. Volkswagen Golf GTI/Golf R

The MK7 Golf GTI (seen above - also watch our What's new in the Golf GTI Mk7 video here) and Golf R offer a premium experience, but be prepared for higher maintenance costs compared to the Japanese options.  Ensure you have access to a reputable VW specialist for servicing and have the car checked out thoroughly by an expert before you buy.

5. Audi TT

The Audi TT offers class and collectibility, but it comes with the associated maintenance costs. The second generation (seen above, in TTS trim) is relatively reliable, but finding a well-maintained example is crucial. Factor in service costs when budgeting.
