4 things you need to know about the Mercedes-Benz SLK

The Mercedes-Benz SLK is based largely off its bigger SL-Class sibling but is a smaller and lighter version of a Benz roadster.

1. What is the Mercedes-Benz SLK?

The Mercedes-Benz SLK is known to be a compact and upmarket roadster that has lived through two decades and three generations. The title “SLK” stands for Sportlich, Leicht und Kurz, which in English, translates to sporty, light, and short. Whether in its coupe or cabriolet configuration, the roadster embodies all those traits.

It was the first small and affordable two-seater convertible from the German automaker since the 1955 190 SL.

Although the SLK can no longer be bought new, it was last refreshed in 2016 and renamed to the Mercedes-Benz SLC.

The SLK has been an innovative product for Mercedes-Benz and rivals the BMW Z4 Roadster, the Audi TT Roadster and despite the different proposition, even the mid-engined Porsche Boxster.

2. Is the Mercedes-Benz SLK good to drive?

Despite the roadster marketing campaigns, the SLK is a comfortable cruiser with a decently-spacious cabin, comfortable seats, relaxed steering and supple suspension. Its third-generation model was a lot sharper than its predecessors, however, it’s still trumped by some other contemporary sports cars for handling.

Not to say it has bad handling or isn’t good to drive, it’s AMG-badged variants are more lively and provides an enjoyable drive. Although, enthusiasts preferred Porsche's Boxster for a more saturating experience.

Despite that, the SLK still sold well because there’s just something about having a car with a three-pointed star in your driveway.

3. What is the Mercedes-Benz SLK AMG?

The fastest car in every Benz range is always tweaked by Mercedes-Benz's AMG division. For the SLK 55 AMG, performance was befittingly beefed-up, allowing the car to sprint from 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.

Despite its petite size, this model is powered by a 5.5-litre V8 engine that puts out a healthy 421hp and a deep exhaust burble.

The first-gen SLK 32 AMG was powered by a 354hp 3.2-litre V6, while the second-gen powerhouse — SLK 55 AMG — was powered by a 360hp 5.4-litre V8.
