3 things we love about the BMW i5 M60 xDrive

We had a little time to sample the BMW i5 M60 xDrive and within that time, there were three things we loved about the executive saloon.

Considered the top of the range of the latest 5 Series, the i5 M60 is the all-electric variant of the famous 5 Series moniker. My colleague Ané Albertse attended the launch of the 5 Series, and you can check out her thoughts here.

You can enjoy much of BMW's new digital innovations in the latest 5 Series, but it still remains the executive saloon that everyone knows and loves. We briefly had the i5 M60 for a short stint and found three things we loved about this vehicle.

Ludicrous Power

The i5 comes equipped with BMW's eDrive tech. You'll find electric motors on the front and rear axles to give you an xDrive all-wheel-drive system. This system zaps out 442kW and up to 820Nm when the M Sport Boost or M Launch Control is enabled. 0-100kmh time is rated at 3.8s. Battery capacity is a 81.2 kWh with a max claimed WLTP range of 516km. AC Charging with an output of 11kW is standard and 22kW optionally. The power delivery in the i5 can move tectonic plates, but alas, we tapered off slightly due to rain and less-than-ideal road conditions. Despite this, though, the i5 handled the wet stuff well, even with the ludicrous power on hand.

Fully Vegan Interior

When one tends to think of a 'Vegan Interior', you'd think of it something inferior to genuine leather or something of the sorts. In this application, however, the 5 series interior is vegan as standard. This is a full interior also, so this includes the surfaces like the seats, dashboard, door panels and even steering wheel too. We wouldn't have realised it if you didn't tell us that the interior was vegan! The material quality and feel is similar to that of the genuine articles. There is optional decorative perforation in this interior, too. The cabin is luxurious and exudes comfort, too, as you'd expect with an executive saloon like this.

Bold styling

Styling can be a divisive topic, but it can be agreed that the exterior styling of the i5 is indeed bold. The burly saloon silhouette has some road presence with design cues like the high shoulder line, large kidney grill, and angular exterior features like the headlights and air dams. The styling can also be enhanced with the M Sport package. With this vehicle, we quite like the wheel style and fitment, too.
