Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 concept car

Those who may have been disappointed by the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class which is “just” a more luxurious stretched Mercedes S-Class will now be shocked.

Among the classic cars, converged on Pebble Beach in California for a very special beauty contest, stood this beast:  the Mercedes-Maybach 6 concept car.  When looking at the Maybach brand’s original luxury cars from the era before television, this new concept car seems to be in line with the elaborate design Maybach was known for.

The company describes the Mercedes-Maybach 6 as a sensational luxury-class coupé.  This 2+2-seater is a homage to the glorious age of the aero coupés, consciously carrying this tradition forward.  It reinterprets classic, emotional design principles, in an extreme way… just have a look – a picture speaks a thousand words.

It measures almost 6 metres in length, which is where the rather unimaginative name “6” is taken from.

This is designed as an electric car, and a good example of how the electric car (not restricted by an engine and gearbox and mechanical parts) gets freedom of extreme design.  The shallow underfloor battery allows the super-slippery shape, which sees an extremely long bonnet, low roof line and rearward cabin positioning… and is good for a range of 500+ kilometres.  The drive system output is, thankfully, also a match for the looks – the electric drive can generate 550kW.

When asking people what the Mercedes-Maybach 6 concept cars reminds them of, the answers are as varied as opera, gangsters and fiction.

Close-up design

Having a close-up look at the design, one sees the vertical fine struts in the huge front grille, said to be inspired by the pinstripe suit.

The 24-inch wheels are a development of the aero rim of cars of days gone by, but here as a transparent shield in the vehicle colour to provide a view of the wheel spokes behind it.

Gullwing doors, as hallmark Mercedes design element, is sure to add drama.  Exterior mirrors sit as cameras supported on the wings.

The boat tail format recalls the luxury yacht, with flat wide taillights emphasising the width of the car.

The shallow rear split windows are also a retro-inspired design.

360-degree lounge and glass digital strip

The dashboard wing curves across the door trim into the seat landscape, creating a 360° lounge.

In addition to the flowing contours, the material composition produces a luxury experience of the highest order, with authentic materials such as rose gold used to create luxurious accents.

Other display elements are digitally integrated into a continuous glass trim strip.  Information about the seat, for example, can be shown on this digital strip.  Map information is also shown in the front area of the strip.  Menu content is extended along a digital line which extends to the sides, where occupants can set their own content ergonomically using touch control.
