Toyota enhances the Genuine Warranty

 

Two new products improve warranty cover at competitive premiums

Following the success of Toyota's established extended warranty offers, these extra-cost warranties have now been expanded to longer coverage periods, yet still retain very affordable rates. This demonstrates Toyota's faith in the durability of their products, and puts seriously long-term warranties within reach of many more buyers.

New Vehicle Warranties
New Toyotas can benefit from extensions to the standard 3-year warranty, to either 6 or 8 years, while the mileage limit of the standard warranty is removed completely. This means that you could conceivably buy, say, a new Corolla Quest, drive it for 8 years and rack up hundreds of thousands of kilometres, before running out of warranty cover. You don't even need to pay up-front for the warranty extension, as it can be financed by the Toyota Genuine Service Centre – leaving you to pay a small monthly instalment for 24 months in addition to your normal car payment, and thereafter nothing more for that peace of mind.

The really interesting part of the new Genuine Unlimited Warranty, is that certain wear items are also covered under the terms and conditions. These include the shock absorbers and the clutch, and also makes provision for skimming of brake disks under the warranty plan. Brake pads, however, are not covered. It gets even better if you drive a Hybrid, because Toyota will extend the warranty period to 10 years on those vehicles.

Of course, you need to have your vehicle serviced at Toyota dealerships to maintain its full service history, but the plan actually allows the owner to skip one scheduled service in the vehicle's first 3 years or 100,000 km, without affecting this warranty in any way.

Pre-owned vehicle warranties

On Toyotas up to 7 years of age, and with less than 200,000 km on the clock at the time of purchase, Toyota offers buyers the option of reinstating the original factory warranty for a period of 2 years, up to a maximum of 250,000 km. These vehicles need a full Toyota service history to be eligible, however, the extended warranty does allow for up to two non-consecutive services to be skipped without voiding the warranty completely. In the event of skipped services, an excess payment will be incurred, moving some of the responsibility back to the owner – but still to a far less degree than without this warranty.

Once again, the warranty can be purchased with a full owner down-payment, or it can be financed through a Toyota Genuine Service Centre, leading to a small monthly payment for the two years of the warranty's effective period. This pre-owned warranty does not include wear items like the new-car warranty extension does, though.

Pricing

Extensions for new petrol Toyotas under two litres will cost R3,340 upfront for the 6-year warranty and R5,230 for the 8-year warranty, translating to monthly payments of about R155 or R252 respectively, and new-car warranty extensions for vehicles with petrol engines larger than two litres will cost about double that. Diesel Toyotas are also covered, with engines smaller than three litres incurring upfront payments of R6,995 and R9,730 for the 6- and 8-year warranties respectively, and diesels (larger than three litres) running these numbers up to R10,460 and R16,815 respectively. Monthly premiums for diesels range between about R344 and R847. And remember, these monthly payments end after two years, leaving you with all the cover, but with a reduced financial burden. 

For pre-owned Toyotas, due to their different risk profile and shorter extended warranty period, the premiums are calculated slightly differently, ranging between R4,830 for the lowest classified petrol- to R11,815 for the most expensive diesel warranty, or monthly instalments ranging between about R232 and R590 over 24 months. As with the new car warranties, this buys you unlimited cover and claims, which is quite nice to know when you drive an older vehicle.
