If you’re a lover of the outdoor lifestyle  but you also love Beluga caviar and insist on drinking only Veuve Clicquot champagne, chances are you’ve never actually considered buying a bakkie until you heard about the new Mercedes-Benz X-Class. Or perhaps you just love the brand and you think an X-Class in your driveway would look rather nice, as well as serve your kitesurfing/biking/farming habits rather well. Either way, Mercedes-Benz has an X-Class bakkie that will suit your needs. And you will be able to tick as many boxes for driver assistance, safety, and convenience spec as you did in your C-Class, but it will come at a price, of course.

The four-model, all-diesel line-up will be launching in May 2018, in Progressive and Power guises, with the option of a 7-speed automatic gearbox. The Progressive models are the ‘entry-level’ bakkies, while the Power derivatives will pack more features. The flagship V6  X-Class is scheduled to arrive a little later this year, but prices have not been confirmed for the South African market yet.

The X-Class 220d has 120 kW and 403 Nm on tap, while the X-Class 250d has 140kW and 450 Nm under its hood. Mercedes-Benz claims that combined consumption in the 220d is 7.5 litres per 100 km and 7.7 in the 250d, but we reckon it will be closer to 10 and 11 litres respectively, as the X-Class is quite a heavy vehicle. That figure will also go up, depending on what you’re towing to the dam.

We’ll have  more details when the X-Class launches. But for now, here’s how much you’ll need to budget for.
