Exactly like 1 Series coupé was replaced by 2 Series coupé, it is now happening with the soft-top version:meet the BMW 2 Series convertible.
3 engine models will be available. There is a choice of 2 x 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo engines, badged as 220i in 135kW and 270Nm output, or 228i with its 2.0-litre turned up to 180kW with torque peak at 350Nm.  No diesel-engined 220d, as found in the coupé, will be offered locally with the open car.

If, however, you like the straight-6 engine idea, and believe BMW 6-cylinder = sheer driving pleasure (which gave the original 3 Series and the BMW 135i their enviable status) then the M235i convertible is what you’ll want – a 3-litre BMW straight-6 with turbocharger, which uses 240kW and 450Nm to sprint to 100km/h in 5.0 seconds, as claimed for the 8-speed sports-Steptronic – a 6-speed manual is also available, which takes 5.2 seconds.

Pricing kicks off at R 490 500 for the 220i convertible in Sport line trim with manual gearbox – add R 15 200 for Luxury line.  The BMW 228i convertible costs R 529 000, with a choice of Sport or Luxury at the same prices.

For the one with the M badges and sportier trim, to make the M Sport package, add R 12 900 for the 220i or R 9 500 for the 228i.  This is unusually low cost for an M Sport.  The M235i convertible is the high-performance one, priced at R 651 600, which comes only in this spec level, sitting between M Sport and M car.

If you want an automatic, it is R 18 000 for Steptronic automatic on 220i and 228i, or R 20 100 for the sport version of this gearbox, on any of the 3 models.

This pricing structure means a premium of approximately R80k for the convertible body over the 2 Series coupé, with only slightly reduced performance and efficiency due to the heavier convertible structure.
