The new baby Jeep Renegade is set to redefine fun and adventure – prices and models here
After months of hype, the new baby Jeep Renegade is finally in SA this week. It is marketed as Redefine Fun, Redefine Adventure, Reimagine Attraction, Ready to go, Stand out and Stand up, Get out and go, and such lines, encouraging would-be buyers to re-think their compact cross-over/SUV choice.
The most fun and cutest Jeep ever it clearly is – the styling is totally a re-think, from the classic Jeep 7-slot grille with single round headlights re-interpreted into a friendly retro look. The strong jerry can theme is applied generously on everything from taillights to interior to roof.
The Renegade is actually an old Jeep name used on the Jeep CJ (pre Wrangler) models, so Renegade regenerated. The English word renegade is also synonym to rebel, and this suits the baby Jeep’s character perfectly.
The Jeep Renegade range will be offered in 1.6 petrol, 1.4 turbo petrol, 1.6 turbo diesel, or 2.4 petrol. Spec levels will mirror the new Jeep Cherokee, with base Longitude, luxury Limited and rugged Trailhawk. Unfortunately the 5-model line-up is restricted in terms of spec-with-engine, so the Trailhawk only comes with the 2.4 engine rather than the compact turbo.
Prices range between R 340 990 and R 450 990, so clearly not aimed to compete with the soft cross-overs like recently-launched Renault Captur or Citroën C4 Cactus, but rather more against tougher-looking SUV-biased cross-overs like Nissan Qashqai or MINI Countryman. The Jeep Renegade also has the option of front-wheel drive or 4x4, and Jeep says it is the most capable compact SUV ever.
