Straddling bus concept
Straddling bus concept
In 2010 a Chinese developer, unimpressed by city traffic congestion, had a vision for a transport solution: a wide bus that straddles / bridges 2 lanes of traffic, riding on wheels under buttresses, with space for normal car traffic to pass underneath it. It was ridiculed as the “car-eating bus”.
Now, a new straddling bus concept is a combination of 7.8-metre wide bus (spanning 2 lanes of city roads) and in-city tram, though modernised to offer a smooth ride-along experience where passengers can travel around the city without the stress of a car or other public transport – this bus has on-board stations where one could use a computer, or you could have soft drinks, interact, or just travel in comfort.
The 60-metre long can carry up to 1400 passengers, so this straddling bus hopes to replace several other regular city buses.
It is said to enter a full prototype test phase in China from August 2016.
