South Africa’s top 10 best-selling cars

Even though sales are down by 6.1 percent compared to July last year, many South Africans still manage to find the cash to buy new cars. Here are the top-selling passenger vehicles for July 2015, according to NAAMSA.

1.  Volkswagen Polo Vivo (2871 units sold)

The humble Vivo is officially SA’s top-seller, which proves that a German name badge teamed with a pocket-friendly price tag makes for a winning recipe. Volkswagens are well known for keeping their value too, come trade-in or re-sale time. (From R 145 700)

2.  Volkswagen Polo (2084 units sold)

Downsized, efficient turbo engines, good looks and German build quality are the key to the Polo’s positive sales figures. The classical and elegant Polo is loved by both sexes and all ages, and is here to stay. (From R 196 400)

3.  Toyota Corolla, Quest & Auris (1919 units sold)

As Toyota only submits aggregated figures, we don’t exactly know how much of what was sold. The newly face-lifted Auris is better than ever, the spacious Quest offers great value for money, and the family-friendly Corolla is one of SA’s garage staples. (From R 183 900 for the Quest)

4.  Toyota Etios (1515 units sold)

The Etios is a car with one of the liveliest engines on the low-budget block. The Etios’s 1.5-litre engine (66kW / 132 Nm) is sufficient for city as well as highway driving and the cabin is quite roomy. The Etios sedan has a sizeable boot, but it’s not a looker. Either way, it’s a Toyota. (From R 137 200)

5.  Ford Fiesta (948 units sold)

Ford’s award-winning 1.0 litre turbo engines are economical, yet powerful enough for everyday enjoyment. The Fiesta offers quite a sporty drive, and is low in running costs. (From R 198 900 for the Fiesta 5-door 1.4 Ambiente)

6.  Renault Sandero (899 units sold)

French charm, good performance, high spec levels and low fuel consumption sum up the Renault Sandero perfectly. Then there’s the price: The Sandero 66 kW turbo Expression variant only costs R 129 900, which is probably the real reason behind the Sandero’s success.

7.  Ford Figo (893 units sold)

The generously specced Figo is a lot of fun to drive and easy on the finances too. Even the entry-level Figo 1.4 Ambiente has Ford’s ICE  (In-car Entertainment) system, which includes Bluetooth. (From R 148 900)

8.  Ford EcoSport (732 units sold)

Its cheeky looks, compact size and good ride quality make the EcoSport the perfect car for the city and beyond. It seems to be popular among older drivers too, who like its high seating position and good all-round visibility. (From R 213 900)

9.  Toyota Fortuner  (717 units sold)

We see a Toyota Fortuner on our roads every five minutes or less. Why do they keep selling like hot cakes? Good resale value and aftersales service, as well as the reliability of the Toyota badge and low maintenance costs. (From R 391 700)

10.  Datsun GO (704 units sold)

The lambasted Datsun Go proves that cars don’t need ABS or airbags to sell. On the plus side, it may make you a more careful driver. Datsun should really offer a defensive driving course with every Go sold. Better than taking a bus or a taxi, we suppose. And there’s no denying it – it is quite cute. (From R 95 200)
