S-Class now in cabriolet

For the first time in decades, the S-Class will be available in cabriolet.  That’s right, the S-Class is now available in cabriolet. 

Mercedes has not had a car in the high-end luxury cabriolet sector for many many years, not counting the Mercedes SL which has of course filled this role supremely well… but no large 4-seater cabriolet could be bought with the star in the grille, leaving some to go for the likes of a Bentley Continental GT convertible or Maserati GranCabrio – these are the cars the new S cabrio has in its sight.

Full trio of models for SA

After the international media drive just weeks ago, it was reported by some that South Africa will get only the S500 and S63 models, so we’d lose out on the V12 S65.  Good news then is that all 3 models are available to order for a wealthy few South Africans.

The same 3 engine / equipment level models as per the S-Class coupé is also available for the S-Class cabriolet, namely Mercedes-Benz S500 cabriolet (standard or with optional AMG Line package) with its V8 turbo “entry-level” engine, and the pair of Mercedes-AMGs in V8 turbo (S63) or V12 turbo (S65) form.  The Mercedes-AMG S63 cabriolet will likely, as per the Mercedes-AMGs S63 coupé, be the most popular of the trio.

Thanks to the strong engines and limited weight addition, the performance of the cabriolet is hardly affected.

Pricing for S-Class cabriolet in SA

Put into perspective, the S-Class coupé models price from R 2.06 million to R 3.3 million, with the open S adding R200k+ to the prices, which (including emissions tax) are:

Mercedes-Benz S500 cabriolet	R 2 309 488
Mercedes-AMG S63 cabriolet	R 2 914 036
Mercedes-AMG S65 cabriolet	R 3 518 368

To compare, the Maserati GranCabrio Sport pricing is R 3 143 448, while the GranCabrio MC is priced at R 3 557 448.

The Maserati and Mercedes prices slot in neatly below the Bentley Continental GT V8 convertible at R 3 794 000, but if you must have the 12-cylinder top-status experience, the Bentley W12 convertible sits at R 4 165 000, up to R 4 577 000 for the Bentley Continental GT Speed W12 convertible.
