Prices and specs announcement – Land Rover Discovery Sport

Author - Author

Land Rover SA announced pricing on the all-new first-ever Discovery Sport – a new nameplate for the renowned SUV brand.

It has been months of talking about this new Land Rover, with billboards next to major highways showing its imminent arrival.  Pre-sell orders are being taken now, with on-sale date end of May 2015.

Land Rover SA says:  “The launch of Discovery Sport marks the first step in establishing a family of products that carry the Discovery nameplate. This family of vehicles, which will distinguish
themselves from other Land Rover products and competitors, will offer the most
versatile proposition within the segment in which they compete.”

“Discovery Sport will succeed Freelander 2 within the overall portfolio of Land
Rover products but is not to be considered a like for like replacement. Rather, it
delivers much more than a mere update to the outgoing product, and brings the key
attributes it shares with Discovery to the compact SUV segment. In doing so, Discovery Sport offers a unique blend of design appeal, capability and versatility.”

Discovery Sport is fitted with either turbo diesel TD4 or SD4, turbo petrol Si4 engines, familiar from Freelander 2 and Range Rover Evoque.  Quick spec overview:  both diesels are 2.2-litre, with TD4 producing 110kW and 400Nm, and the SD4 at 140kW and 420Nm.  The Si4 can do 177kW and 340Nm.  Fuel consumption and emissions are 6.0 and 159 for TD4, 6.1 and 166 for SD4, while Si4 comes in at 8.0 l/100km and 197 g/km.  The manuals are gone – all these will have 9-speed automatic gearing.

The model range comprises 9 derivatives, with S as the entry spec level, coupled to TD4, SD4 or Si4 engines – the TD4 is only available in S spec.  The SE, HSE and HSE Luxury (to copy a name from big-brother Discovery and Range Rovers) can be sold in a choice of either SD4 or Si4 engine.

Discovery Sport is positioned as a premium offering within the compact SUV segment – main current rivals are Audi Q5, BMW X3, Volvo XC60 and Jeep Cherokee.  Discovery Sport has a standard 4WD transmission, as do BMW X3 in xDrive only drivetrain, unlike the other rivals here which offer front or 4-wheel drive options.

Discovery Sport will also be unique in this group by offering a 7-seat option, and pricing is competitive for the 5-seater price listed below:
