Price + spec news – Volvo S90 luxury sedan arriving in SA

Pricing for the forthcoming new Volvo S90 luxury sedan has been officially released by Volvo Car South Africa.

Challenge the definition of luxury

“With the new Volvo S90 we are about to challenge the definition of luxury once again – a feat we achieved with the all-new XC90 when it launched in South Africa in mid-2015,” comments the Volvo Car South Africa MD.  “We believe that the S90 range, which comprises petrol and diesel models, all of which are powered by our revered Drive-E engines, brings real value for money to the segment without compromising on quality, or indeed luxury.”

The Volvo XC90 won the WesBank SAGMJ Car of the Year competition fair and square, getting much-needed focus back onto Volvo in the luxury sector, and paving the way for the S90 executive sedan to make an elegant, confident entrance.

The new S90 range includes 12 derivatives, spanning 4 engines of 2 drivetrains (front or AWD) in 3 trim levels namely Momentum (base), R-Design (sporty) and Inscription (luxury).

Initially available with D5 AWD or T6 AWD drivetrains and in Momentum or Inscription trim, the new Volvo S90 makes its South African debut towards the end of 2016.  In 2017, D4 and T5 (both front-wheel drive) will become available, along with the R-Design trim level.

All engines are the Drive-E of 2-litre 4-cylinder using turbo (T5, D4 and D5) or turbo-supercharged in the T6.  The petrol T5 is equipped with 187kW and 350Nm, the D4 diesel has 140kW and 400Nm (and is the most economical), while the more powerful D5 (putting out 173kW/480Nm and featuring PowerPulse technology) and T6 (235kW and 400Nm) get AWD to aid with grip control.

The smooth 8-speed Geartronic gearbox is standard on all S90 models.

Introduction of the S90 T8 hybrid, as per XC90 T8, has not been confirmed for SA.

Confident pricing structure

A confident pricing structure sees the new large executive sedan poised to place the S90 as a key premium player in its segment.  Starting at R 675 200 and topping out at the range-topping model’s retail of R 871 900 (both excluding minimal emissions tax), the Volvo S90 aims to be priced against the other mid-size luxury sedans like the Lexus GS, Jaguar XF, BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6… but with its own distinguished take on understated luxury.
