The new BMW 5 Series gets internal codename G30, and it is on its way to South Africa.  With the previous F10  5 Series, which launched here in 2010, and the F10M M5 now gone, the new 5 is ready to step up… and step up it will.  As BMW tradition dictates, the 5 follows the latest 7 Series, in terms of basic styling and latest technology, but in the well-fitting mid-size exec sedan shape.

In a nutshell, the new 5 has proper high-tech to go a step closer to the self-driving car: it has everything from Evasion Aid which while help evasive steering around obstacles (by itself) to Intelligent Speed Assist, which can read speed limit signs and adjust the cruise control to the new set speed.

Perspective

Perspective, first.  The new E-Class – the 5’s main rival – has had time to enter the market, and flesh out the model variants.  The entry price for a new Mercedes-Benz E200 is just on R710k, while the recently-added V6 E400 goes for R996k.  Audi A6 starts with a 1.8TFSI at R 662 000, up to R1.162 for the S6.  The Jaguar XF ranges from R 765 900 to R1.283m for the XF S.  Lexus GS – R 782 100 for the 200t and R 892 600 for the 350.  New player Volvo S90 kicks off with R 678 500 for a T5 to R 833 530 for the T6 AWD.

The previous 5 Series, at last price, started with the R654k 520i, to R 1.169 for the 550i V8.

New BMW 5 Series prices for South Africa

The G30 5 Series pricing has been made public, and there are 4 models initially coming here, to arrive in the 1st half of 2017.

BMW introduces the new 5 Series with 520d as the base model (no 520i this time, to counter the E200) at R 780 156, spanning to R 990 316 for the 540i.

Before long-time BMW fans get too excited when seeing the return of the revered 540i badge – this is not the V8, but the 3.0 inline-6 as per 340i and 740i (both 240kW), but in this new 540i power is 250kW.  The new 540i can sprint to 100 in 5.1s.

The M550i xDrive will be the V8 to get excited about (340kW, 4-wheel-drive, 0-100 4.0 sec) due later.
