Mercedes SL – enviable reputation

In this world of cars, Mercedes SL is a car name that stands out with a long heritage and enviable reputation as big powerful luxurious expensive grand-tourer slash 2-seat roadster.

It is one of the (or thé) consummate big 2-seat roadster which can play any card and win – luxury coupé (thanks to the folding hardtop), big powerful sports car, comfortable roadster… other market players may have 2-seat roadsters / spiders / convertibles and some are 4-seat convertibles / cabriolets, but as a big 2-seat roadster offering everyday comfort + that SL status, does the Mercedes SL have an equal?  In your Mercedes SL (classic, recent, new, Benz or AMG…) you can roll in or out of any luxury hotel, dinner party, coast road cruise, and feel at ease.  There is car giving more of a rich splendour joy than driving a big open car just for the 2 of you.

For the facelift, Mercedes has rounded the current pre-facelift R231-generation SL’s perhaps overly-square corners and headlights into a more rounded styling.  The car designer who penned the new S-Class coupé, among other new Mercedes, said he would like to design an SL, and judged by his current work, it should be another masterpiece… but as a new shape SL only comes along less than once a decade, the current one introduced in 2012 will get a big facelift for 2016 (detailed in an earlier report).

The 4-model line-up stays as before, starting with the SL400 AMG Line with 3.0 V6 turbo (yes, even the entry-level SL can do a 0-100 in 4.9 seconds and reach 250km/h) or the SL500 AMG Line using a 335kW 4.7 V8 turbo (4.3 sec). 

If you want an AMG, the SL63 uses the AMG V8 biturbo, increased in 2014 to take on the previously optional AMG Performance model’s engine ratings:  up from 395 to 430kW, and not 800 but 900 Nm.  If you want the ultimate SL and that intriguing V12, the SL65 6-litre biturbo AMG engine gives 463kW and a better-hold-on torque of a cool round 1000 Newtons.
