Opel GT Concept – puristic futuristic “approachable” sports car

The Opel GT Concept was created as a car with everything needed to appeal to car enthusiasts of all age groups.

Opel’s vision of an approachable sports car – the Opel GT Concept

Opel’s commitment is to an exciting future, with its vision for an “approachable” sports car, rather than an elusive supercar or unrealistic one-off concept.  The Opel GT Concept does indeed look small, fun, and not ridiculously dismissable.

Puristic form, intriguing one-piece doors, red front tyres

The Opel GT Concept takes its inspiration from the Opel GT from decades ago (late 60s to early 70s) as can be seen in the basic shape… this new concept re-invents the compact Opel sports coupé – a great idea.

The sculptural form of the Opel GT Concept is avant-garde yet puristic, created intentionally to avoid anything that disturbs the pure form – zero superfluous decorative elements.  There are no door mirrors, door handles and no conventional metal doors or side windows – instead, the doors are intriguing one-piece items, blending the lower body panel into the top see-through part “window”, with no line to disrupt the soapy-velvet-smooth side look.

Opel GT Concept has red front tyres, in case you haven’t noticed – this is part of the design to make it unique, and to be a starting point for the red line graphic flowing along the flowing roof line, visually splitting the silver underbody from the black top.

The rear is adorned in classic small-touch detailing:  the dual port of exhausts are integrated into the bumper, with GT chrome badge placed in the middle.

Interior is as minimalist… not a button in sight   

The interior is as minimalist as the exterior:  the puristic futuristic silver-red-black theme continues inside.  A red driver’s seat with black passenger seat, floating forms and digital instruments… not a button in sight.

Look closely and you’ll notice the embossed chrome GT badge greeting you as you open the door, located on the tube extending from the dashboard.  This tube houses the display screen for the rear view mirror (as there are no physical mirrors).  Even the stalks on the steering column are a creative design with red insert lines.

Futuristic yet classic sports car

It is intended to be a dynamic driving machine, symbolised by the typical sports car proportions of long bonnet and super-short overhangs with fleshed-out wheel arches to push the wheels out as far as possible.

It may be futuristic, but is uses the basic classic sports car drivetrain layout of front mid-engine and rear-wheel drive, complete with mechanical rear diff lock for traction.  The gearbox is a 6-speed sequential paddle shifter.

What makes this Opel more realistic and properly modern is the knowledge that the engine from the Opel Adam/Corsa/Astra is intended to be used – a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbo is the perfect mate for this type of “approachable” sports car.  A total weight below 1000kg would make it nippy, and fun to drive.

Opel GT – bring back uncomplicated excitement

Now, if only those of us who adore the Opel GT Concept’s looks would put our money where our eyes are, by letting Opel know that people would actually buy this puristic futuristic “approachable” sports car.

Opel has built several sports cars, like the original Opel GT, Opel Manta, Opel Calibra, Opel Tigra and, in the 2000s, the Opel Speedster (a.k.a. Vauxhall VX – both built by Lotus) so a new Opel GT exactly as (or very close to) this GT Concept would be a welcome addition – bring back the Opel sports car, and uncomplicated excitement.
