New engines go into BMW 1 Series and 2 Series, plus newly-formed 230i, M140i and M240i
New engines for 1 Series and 2 Series BMWs
With the introduction of the BMW 3 Series facelift, it received a new generation of 4- and 6-cylinders engines, and earlier this year it was reported that the 4 Series also received the newer mechanicals, and . Now it is the turn of the 1 Series and 2 Series BMWs to get these new engines and new names.
BMW 120i, 125i, 220i and new 230i
July 2016 will see the generation change under their respective bonnets, which will positively affect the BMW 1 Series hatch (only the 5-door remains for South Africa) and the 2 Series coupé and convertible.
Slight engine output increases of 5kW combined with improved fuel efficiency apply to these 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine models, being 120i, 125i and 220i, while the previous 228i gets a new engine and a new name: 230i. This means there are new models of BMW named 230i coupé and 230i convertible.
BMW M140i and M240i
The BMW M Performance 6-cylinder engines in the 1 and 2 Series cars are upgraded from 240kW to 250kW, and the M135i / M235i 450Nm torque is upped to 500Nm in the newly-badged M140i and M240i variants.
Performance is enhanced further, seeing these scamper even more quickly than their predecessors. The 4-wheel-drive M140i xDrive and M240i coupé xDrive (xDrive not for SA in these cars) with 8-speed Steptronic automatic is said to need just 4.4 seconds for the to-100 dash.
