Most anticipated new cars for 2016 – pick-ups (bakkies)

Which new pick-ups (commonly known as bakkies in South Africa) are the most anticipated new ones to arrive in SA in 2016?

Fiat Fullback

Fiat is entering the 1-ton pick-up (bakkie) segment for the 1st time, with the Fullback, to fall under the Fiat Professional (commercial vehicles) unit.

The Fullback name is derived from the cornerstone position in rugby and American football.  It is also derived from the new Mitsubishi Triton.  In Brazil, the Fiat Toro is released, as proper Fiat bakkie.

Mitsubishi Triton

Mitsubishi Motors will introduce the new Triton as Sports Utility Truck to the SA market during 2016.

The new Triton is created to be more car-like to drive, with better ride comfort and stability, more luxury, and more safety.  A new 2.4-litre turbo diesel engine with the option of Mitsubishi’s Super Select II 4-wheel-drive system will be available.

Nissan NP300 Navara

Another long delay by Nissan SA to bring new product to our market – the NP300 Navara was shown in June 2014 and has been available in other countries… but the new Navara (now named NP300 Navara) is yet to arrive.

Designed for greater durability, more efficient performance, productivity and style, a new SUV-like interior, though sticking with a 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine. 

The remaining question is: will the new NP300 Navara arrive in SA after the new Hilux?

Toyota Hilux

Certainly one of the most anticipated launched this year is the all-new Hilux.  This only happens around once a decade.

The new Toyota Hilux will again be built in South Africa, and the new re-designed Hilux is said to redefine tough.  The fit-for-purpose Hilux will again be favoured in applications ranging from workhorse to leisure, farming, or general purpose.  The engine line-up will include new 2.4 and 2.8 diesel turbo engines, with better torque, improved efficiency, and better low-speed off-road performance.

With Ford Ranger having taken number 1 sales spot for a few months, will the new Toyota Hilux regain its top position as SA’s most popular bakkie?
