Mercedes GLC coupé let loose

Mercedes’ promise to make a coupé version of the GLC is kept – the GLC SUV is by now well-established, so the time is ripe to let the GLC coupé loose.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC coupé is said to successfully fuse the multi-functional SUV and emotively-appealing coupé – an SUV-coupé fusion of intelligence and emotion.

The GLC coupé owes its sleek coupé-esque silhouette and 3-quarter-view angles to a dropping roofline, ending in a high, rounded tail with integrated spoiler lip.

Sporty-dynamic ambitions

Any GLC coupé model has sporty-dynamic ambitions, which the buyer will choose over the more regular GLC 5-door.  Models will start off with Mercedes-Benz GLC220d coupé, GLC250d coupé and GLC250 coupé.

As the Mercedes-AMG GLC43 (SUV body) has already been revealed, expect a coupé version too – the to-be Mercedes-AMG GLC43 coupé will take up the most sporty duties with its 3.0 V6 turbo engine.

Spy shots recently shown on internet indicate a possible V8 performance version, which could be the preview of a Mercedes-AMG GLC63, so a Mercedes-AMG GLC63 coupé should follow – will this happen, to take on the likes of Porsche Macan turbo?

Copy coupé

The Mercedes GLC coupé is not an entirely new idea – the bigger Mercedes GLE coupé (itself a coupé version of the Mercedes GLE) already prepared a shadow for the more-compact GLC coupé to walk in.

Rival BMW laid the pioneering ground with their X6 (Sports Activity Coupé) followed up by smaller X4.  So the GLC coupé is a copy of the bigger GLE coupé…. but is the swoopiest in its segment.

Yes for SA?

The instant sales success of the Mercedes-Benz GLC in South Africa shows a strong appetite for a compact premium SUV, with South Africans seemly making up for what was missed out on with its GLK predecessor (which was left-hand drive only).

The bigger Mercedes GLE coupé has become a road style statement, so the GLC coupé would likely repeat this in a smaller, more affordable way.  It’s a yes for SA.
