Meet the Audi Q2 – the new compact cross-over cutie

Author - Author

A fresh product from Audi HQ is the all-new Audi Q2.  It is the 4th and the smallest Audi Q model, enveloping the Q genes and assets, but in a more compact body.

Audi Q2 takes up new compact spot and new styling direction

Thus far, we have the Audi Q7, Audi Q5 and Audi Q3, with the latter added to fill a market need for a compact cross-over SUV type, which is also an Audi.

Now, the Audi Q2 slides in to take up the new compact spot.  To set it apart from the Audi Q3, the Audi Q2 has been designed as with a more emotional, powerful design – this can be seen in generous use of more vertices and edges, like on the fenders in a chiselled very look, and concave flanks.

The headlights are more compact, breaking away from the generic Audi family face, while the taillights are the first square ones seen on an Audi Q model, reminding of the simple days and lasting design of the original Audi A3.

Designed to appeal to a younger buyer profile, for whom the Audi A1 or A3 will not do, and needing something, smaller and more cutie than the Audi Q3.  To compare, the Audi Q3 is just under 4.4 metres in length and 1.59 m high, while the Q2 is 4.19 m long and 1.51 high, or then almost the same dimensions as the Mercedes GLA.

The C-pillars blades are a bold new idea – these can be finished in gloss black or contrasting silver.  Many expressive exterior paint colours and interior trim create a space for personal configuration.

Technology drips down from bigger Q’s

Items like the Audi Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster and driver assistance systems like adaptive cruise control with stop&go function, lane-departure warning and rear cross-traffic assist will all be available on Audi Q2.

The need from the younger car-buying generation to be highly-connected in their cars is catered for w, ith a standard MMI screen, or MMI Navigation plus with MM touch can be ordered, using a touchpad and controller.  Several apps are available.

Simple functionality retained in Audi Q2

Buyers would buy smaller, yet needs the small SUV to retain a high level of functionality.  The Audi Q2 was designed with this in mind, with a high entry, good visibility, and large luggage space of 405 to 1050 litres capacity.

Big Audi-Q stuff filters down again, like an optional power tailgate, and 3-way split bench with cargo through-loading.

Engine options

Engines range from 85 to 140kW for overseas markets, from a 1.0 3-cylinder TFSI turbo to a 2.0 TFSI, which should make it a little performer.  TDI diesel are also in the mix.  Audi Q2 can be had with front-wheel drive or 4-wheel quattro, and 6-speed manual or 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic.

Audi Q2 coming to SA?

Yes, the Audi Q2 will be introduced to South Africa in the 1st quarter of 2017.  The model and pricing details will be announced closer to market introduction.
