Lincoln Navigator Concept – an SUV with gullwing doors and concertina steps

Lincoln is Ford’s luxury car division, and the current Lincoln Navigator is the same size as the Ford Expedition, and Lincoln’s luxury big SUV (American big) alternative to the Cadillac Escalade.

The existing Lincoln Navigator caters to this market, and considering the arrival of the super-lux SUV like the Range Rover SVAutobiography and Bentley Bentayga (with even Rolls-Royce said to have their first SUV on the way) there seems to be a market for this type of vehicle.

Lincoln calls it quiet luxury – vehicles and experiences that are “elegant, effortlessly powerful and serene”, brought to its clients.

An SUV with gullwing doors

Lincoln is showing fans of large SUVs how the company can exceed their expectations, with this Lincoln Navigator Concept.  A pair of gullwing doors on a Mercedes-Benz 300SL or Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG we have seen, and expect this to appear on a flat supercar or some conversion… but on an SUV?  The Lincoln Navigator Concept indeed has a pair of super-size doors which lift upwards, opening up the SUV like stacking doors would on a patio/terrace at home.

… and concertina steps

We’ve seen deployable side steps on Range Rovers, which drop down when you park to give you a step to get in and out, and neatly tuck in under the body as soon as you set off on your luxury SUV commute… but the Lincoln Navigator Concept takes it a step further… or 2 steps further, actually – its 3 concertina steps slide out to help you get in/out.

This is an SUV with wide-open-space gullwing doors and concertina steps, which must make it the easiest ever SUV to access… to those who say “there’s nothing new”.
