Improved power and styling – the new Audi A6 and Audi A7 Sportback

Author - Author

Audi has thoroughly updated the Audi A6 range with new engines, transmissions, headlights, and a new infotainment system that makes the Sedan more efficient, more powerful, more attractive and more sophisticated than ever.

The design of the Audi A6 epitomizes precision and sporty elegance. It was carefully honed as part of the model refresh, with changes made to the Singleframe grille, the headlights, air inlets, bumpers, side sills, rear lights and tailpipes. Audi optionally offers headlights with LED technology or Matrix LED technology, combined with dynamic turn signals.

Due to its intelligent composite construction concept, the body is extremely rigid and safe. Numerous components of aluminium and hot-shaped steel form the backbone of a systematic lightweight construction concept. The new A6 1.8 TFSI has a curb weight (without driver) of just 1,535 kilograms. Luggage capacity is also generous, with the A6 having 530 litres available.

In the interior, every detail documents the uncompromising level of quality familiar to Audi drivers. Elegant colours and carefully selected materials emphasize the refined design. The new A6 is also way ahead of the competition when it comes to infotainment, with configurations ranging up to MMI navigation plus with MMI touch. The top-of-the-line navigation system with the power-retractable eight-inch monitor is now based on a new technology platform that uses the fast Tegra 30 graphics chip from Audi’s partner Nvidia. The supplemental module, Audi connect, brings tailored online services into the car as well as making the vehicle a Wi-fi hotspot.

There are also a wide range of driver assistance systems available, including adaptive cruise control with stop & go function. Audi side assist, which uses radar sensors to check blindspots when changing lanes, works closely together with Audi active lane assist, which prevents unintended lane changes. The night vision assistant now includes even more functions, with the Audi pre sense basic safety system available as an option. Customers are also able to specify the Audi A6 with a head-up display system.

Extensively updated: the engine lineup

The engine lineup for the new Audi A6 includes three TFSI units with output ranging between 140 kW and 331 kW and two TDI units. At the time of launching in South Africa in April 2015, there will only be the 1.8T FSI and S6 available, followed in June by the 3.0 TDI 160 kW S tronic. The 2.0T FSI quattro S tronic will be introduced locally in July 2015, followed by the 2.0 TDI S tronic towards the end of the year. All multitronic CVT transmissions which were available previously have now been replaced by S tronic transmission.

This is the first time that the Audi A6 will be available with a four cylinder 1.8T FSI engine in South Africa which provides customers with a lower price entry point into the C segment. The engine will produce 140 kW of power and 320 Nm and will be coupled with a S tronic transmission. Combined fuel consumption is claimed at 5.8 litres per 100km and CO2 emissions of 138 g/km.

The 3.0 TDI engine available in June will produce 160 kW and 400 Nm of torque. It has a combined fuel consumption of just 4.8 litres per 100 km and also produces extremely low CO2 emissions of only 124 g/km.

The new Audi S6 is quite simply a sports car for everyday. The 4.0 TFSI, a bi-turbo V8 producing an uprated 331 kW, accelerates the Sedan from 0 to 100 km/ in 4.4 seconds. Average fuel consumption is just 9.2 litres per 100 with the equivalent of 214 g/km of CO2. This efficiency is due in large part to the cylinder on demand (COD) system, which only activates four of the eight cylinders when under partial load. Standard equipment in the new Audi S6 includes full LED headlights, quattro permanent all-wheel drive and the adaptive air suspension, which lowers the body by 20 millimetres.

Sleek and stylish – the new Audi A7 Sportback

The spacious five-door coupé, the Audi A7 Sportback, is now even more powerful and attractive – thanks to new engine configurations, new transmissions, new headlights, taillights and new infotainment systems. The new model combines the emotional appeal and sportiness of a coupé with the comfort of a sedan and the functional benefits of an Avant.

Back when the A7 Sportback first debuted in 2010, Audi was already setting new standards in automotive design, embracing an athletic aesthetic and elegance in grand style. Its long engine hood, sporty, flowing C-pillars and the sharply dropping rear end create a dynamic overall impression. The revised version of the five-door model, measuring 4.97 metres in length, now has additional striking and sporty features.

The most striking changes are to the Singleframe grille, bumpers, tailpipes and headlights. LED technology is now standard and upon request, Matrix LED headlights are also available as an option. Combined with the Matrix LED headlights, dynamic turn signals are also installed at the front; they come standard at the rear.

The body of the new Audi A7 Sportback consists primarily of aluminium and high-tech steel grades. It is extraordinarily lightweight and designed for maximum comfort in terms of noise. The cargo space under the long, electrically driven trunk lid has a base capacity of 535 litres. When the rear seat backs are folded down it increases to 1,390 litres.

The sporty style of the exterior is echoed in the car’s interior. The dominant element is the horizontal line surrounding the driver and passenger. The dashboard gives an impression of lightness and elegance. The front seats can be optionally equipped with ventilation and massage functions. The MMI radio operating system comes as standard and can be supplemented with a head-up display and night vision assist system.

Power and efficiency: the engine line-up

Audi South Africa will be offering the new A7 Sportback with a choice of five powerful and highly efficient engines: two petrol and two diesel units with a power rating ranging from 200 kW to 412 kW. The entry engine to the range will be the 3.0 TDI quattro S tronic producing 200 kW of power and 580 Nm of torque. Claimed combined fuel consumption of this model is 5.2 litres per 100 km with CO2 emissions of 136 grams per km.

The 3.0 TDI bi-turbo engine, which delivers 235 kW, works with an eight-speed tiptronic transmission, whereas all other engine configurations in the range have a seven-speed S tronic transmission. It produces an impressive torque figure of 650 Nm and will take 5.2 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h. Despite its power, it will sip just 6.1 litres per 100 km of fuel and has an emissions figure of 162 grams per km.

The first of the petrol engines is the 4.0T FSI found in the S7 Sportback. It delivers an uprated
331 kW of power and 550 Nm of torque, and like its S6 sibling, uses innovative COD (cylinder on demand) technology to save fuel. It propels itself to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds.

The second petrol engine is in the form of the brutal Audi RS7 Sportback. The 4.0 TFSI in the revised Audi RS 7 Sportback provides as before 412 kW, with a constant 700 Nm of torque at engine speeds between 1,750 and 5,500 rpm. The engine catapults the five‑door coupé from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds; the optional dynamic package allows a top speed of 305 km/h. In the ECE cycle however, the resonant V8 bi‑turbo needs only 9.5 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres with 221 grams CO2 per kilometre. A key factor in this efficiency is the cylinder on demand system.

The chassis, too, combines sporty precision with high comfort. The power steering system features an electromechanical drive for high efficiency. The Audi drive select dynamic handling system is standard, while options include dynamic steering, two sport suspension versions and adaptive air suspension.

The new Audi A7 Sportback sets the standard in infotainment. The MMI Navigation plus with MMI touch (standard on the 3.0TDI BiTurbo, S7 and RS7), utilizes the latest generation of the modular infotainment system. Customers may also opt to add the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System.
