If Mom had a choice, what car would she pick?
If Mom had a choice, what car would she pick?
We, as mothers, want different things from our wheels. Because Sunday is Mother's Day, we picked a few cars that may set every type of mom's heart aflutter.
The career mom
Mercedes-Benz CLA200 auto, R 408 429, new.
The sleek and coupé-like, yet functional five-door CLA is head-turningly sexy, easy to drive, and yet it still has ample boot space for tennis racquets, groceries and school bags. For moms who regularly get stuck in stop-and-go traffic, optional Distronic Plus can be activated, which means Mom can apply her mascara while the car applies the brakes automatically, and will start to move again at a preset speed. Red is our colour of choice!
The retired mom
Audi A3 Cabriolet1.4T S auto, R 461 000, new.
Now that the fledglings are out of the nest, why can't mom spoil herself for a change? Heaven knows, she spent her whole life taking care of other people. The A3 Cabriolet is the perfect size and will allow mom to chat to her best friend, at normal volume, with the top down on a beautiful day.
The outdoorsy mom
Renault Duster 1.5dCi Dynamique 4WD, R267 900, new.
The rugged, spacious and easy-to-drive Duster wasn't a Car of the Year finalist for nothing! Its frugal 1.6 litre diesel engine is peppy and as far as 4 x 4 capabilities are concerned, it doesn't have to stand back for any of the bigger, pricier SUV's. Standard satnav makes getting back from a weekend of off-roading stress-free. For the mom who is an adventure seeker, the Duster will not disappoint. (And Dad will love it too.)
The soccer mom
Ford Grand Tourneo Connect 1.6 EcoBoost Titanium A/T LWB, R 367 900, new.
For the mom who spends her whole life shuttling multiple children to and from extra-mural activities, the Ford Grand Tourneo Connect will satisfy her need for space and comfort. With three rows of seats that can be adjusted into almost any position, and plenty of legroom, everyone will be content and hopefully, quiet.
The single mom
VW Passat 2.0 TDI Comfortline, R 386 700, new.
With the reliability of the VW badge, a cavernous boot and cabin, a 5 star EuroNCAP rating and enough power sockets for laptops and other technology, the VW Passat is a logical choice for long journeys. With the kids entertained, Mom won't have to swat blindly into the back of the car hoping to connect with a naughty child. And at fuel economy of only 5.1 litres of diesel per 100 km's (extra-urban), Mom won't have sob into her hands every time she stops at a garage, either.
The cash-strapped mom
Suzuki Ertiga 1.4 GA, R160 600, new.
The practical Ertiga is spacious enough to seat 7 people, easy on the pocket, feels solid on the road and takes the pot holes like a champ! For moms who struggle, the Ertiga is a reliable budget-buy.
