Honda SA introduces 5-year per 200 000 km full warranty on all new Honda cars

Honda SA has introduced an upgrade if its previous 3-year / 100 000 km warranty to a new 5-year / 200 000 km warranty on all new Honda cars sold, effective 07 January 2016.

Honda 5-year / 200 000 km warranty – a full manufacturer warranty

Honda SA says its warranty is a comprehensive one, unlike some other manufacturer warranties where the exclusion list is longer than the list of inclusions.  An example hereof is the recent Hyundai warranty claimed to be extended to 7-year / 200 000 km, but in fact the full manufacturer warranty is still a 5-year / 150 000 km and an extension of 2-year / 50 000 km is a drivetrain warranty.

More good news is that the new long warranty does not affect the service plans, which are standard (in varying durations and distances) on all new Honda cars except the Honda Mobilio Trend and Honda Jazz Trend as the entry-level models.

The new warranty even covers the recently-launched Honda Civic Type R – this makes it the only hot hatch with such an extensive warranty, highlighting Honda’s trust in their robust engines even for the high-revving high-output Type R.

Industry-leading combined full warranty

While Kia, Mahindra, SsangYong and Renault offer a 5-year / 150 000 km warranty, the only 6-year warranty is on some Nissan vehicles, but also capped at 150 000 km.

This means Honda is the only car company in South Africa to include the industry-leading combined warranty for 5-year period plus 200 000 km.  In fact, Honda is the only local new car company to bravely give a 200 000 km distance in its full warranty.

Absorbed in slight price increase

The January 2016 price increase already absorbed the cost of the longer warranty. The extension to bring it up to the new warranty is also available as a bolt-on Honda new-car warranty extension on cars sold before the effective date, and ranges from R 3 000 on the Honda Brio to R 5 800 on the Honda CR-V (these amounts correspond to the January price increase on those models without a general price increase) which is great value for a full manufacturer warranty of another 2 years and 100 000 km.
