With two imminent new sedans, a compact crossover and an upmarket leisure-oriented double-cab on the way in the next 6-10 months, GWM’s model line-up is about to expand significantly, particularly into segments where the brand has not had a major presence before.
GWM Steed 6
First revealed to rapturous applause at the Shanghai Auto Show in China earlier this year, the South African public is among the first in the world to get to see this future model in the metal. The Steed 6 is due to go into production in China early in 2014 and will reach South Africa during the course of next year.
Aimed at upmarket, leisure-oriented shoppers in the double-cab market, the Steed 6 is not only GWM’s biggest pick-up yet, but also its most sophisticated and luxurious. The premium interior features a touch-screen info-tainment system, climate control, one-button start-up and six airbags.
Further improving safety and comfort are; ESP, hill-start and descent assistance, a differential lock and an intelligent four-wheel drive system.
Undoubtedly the Steed 6’s sheer presence will be noticed first. Riding on 17-inch alloy wheels and with boldly flared wheelarches, the Steed 6 measures 5 430 mm in length, 1 800 mm in width and 1 755 mm in height. The ground clearance is 200 mm and the long wheelbase measures 3 200 mm.
To be offered with a range of engines and transmissions when it arrives on the market, this concept vehicle utilises GWM’s proven 2,0-litre VGT powerplant that delivers 110 kW and 310 Nm of torque.
When the Steed 6 debuts in South Africa it will not replace the Steed 5 but be positioned as a premium-segment leisure vehicle, as befits its sophistication and design.
GWM M4
An imminent introduction into the South African market is the brand’s smash-hit M4 compact crossover. This urban warrior is targeted at the young and trendy at heart and boasts an individualistic design, high ground clearance (180 mm+), 16-inch alloy wheels and comprehensive standard specification that includes such items as air-conditioning, electric windows and mirrors, power steering, rear park sensors, radio/CD/MP3 player with USB and auxiliary support, as well as Bluetooth.
Safety equipment offered as standard are dual front airbags, disc brakes all-round supported with ABS with EBD and rear-mounted Isofix child seat anchorages.
The M4 is powered by GWM’s proven 1,5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with intelligent variable valve timing. It delivers 77 kW at 6 000 rpm and 138 Nm at 4 200 rpm.
With strong volume growth predicted for the local compact crossover segment, GWM is confident that the M4 will be as successful in South Africa as it has been in its home market.
GWM C50
GWM’s most sophisticated and upmarket passenger car offering yet, the C50 C-segment sedan, arrives in South Africa soon.
With its long wheelbase (2 700 mm), the C50 doesn’t only boast a dynamic stance and sleek looks, but also passenger space that rivals that on offer from the segment leaders. Even with a tall adult behind the steering wheel, the C50 still offers stretch-out rear legroom and a capacious boot.
From behind the rake- and reach-adjustable steering wheel the upmarket ambience is immediately noticeable in the quality of the materials, the detailing of the instrumentation and the harmonisation of the controls.
Two trim levels are destined for South Africa, both offering a standard specification level aimed at cosetting the occupants, including air-conditioning, power steering, electric windows and mirrors and comprehensive info-tainment systems. The flagship model will also feature items such as cruise control and rear park sensors.
The C50 will introduce GWM’s powerful yet economical new GW4G15T 1,5-litre turbocharged engine into the local market. This sophisticated powerplant delivers 98 kW at 5 600 rpm and 188 Nm of torque from 2 000-4 500 rpm.
GWM C30
This compact B-segment sedan is aimed at young families who need maximum passenger and luggage space and a good balance of power and economy at an affordable price. Don’t be misled by the word “compact”, however… the C30 rides on a stretched (2 610 mm) wheelbase that endows it with one of the most spacious cabins in its segment, as well as one of the largest boots (510 L).
The attractively styled C30 features chiselled, Germanic lines, 15-inch alloy wheels and front and rear fog lamps. Inside the cabin, the emphasis has been on creating stretch-out space and providing all the modern convenience items desired by its target market, including air-conditioning, power steering, electric windows all-round, electric mirror adjustment, radio/CD/MP3 player with USB and auxiliary support and a rake-adjustable steering wheel. Safety is also well catered for with the inclusion of dual front airbags and disc brakes all-round backed by ABS with EBD. Isofix child-seat mountings are fitted at the rear.
The C30 is also powered by GWM’s 1,5-litre VVT-I engine that delivers 77 kW and 138 Nm of torque. It delivers a combined cycle fuel consumption figure of 6,5 L/100 km and powers the car to a 170 km/h top speed.
