Goodyear SoundComfort tyres for Mercedes-Maybach – a simple solution for sound-insulation

Buying new tyres are, for the majority of people, a grudge purchase.  Often it is not understood why tyres should cost so much.  Part of the development cost is to make tyres more quiet, for the benefit of the driver and passengers, but also for drive-by tyre noise reduction.

With millions of miles of laboratory and road test conditions to try reduce tyre noise, tyre manufacturers have tried various methods and tyre designs to make tyres more quiet.

When you see how a modern car is built with so much foam padding in the body at the panel joints, under the bonnet, in the boot and various gaps, all to simply reduce noise, why has no-one added foam into tyres to reduce their noise too?

That is exactly what Goodyear has done.  Just like foam padding added to a car, simply add foam padding to the inside of the tyre.  Why did no-one think of this before?  Hurray to simplicity!

Goodyear explains what was done, and the results:  “Goodyear’s SoundComfort Technology features an open-cell polyurethane foam element attached to the inner surface of the tyre.  The technology dampens the Tyre Cavity Resonance (TCR) sound peak generated when the tyre rolls over a surface by up to 11dBA and enables a vehicle interior noise reduction of up to 4dB, making the vehicle cabin significantly quieter across a large range of vehicle speeds.”

The Goodyear SoundComfort tyre will be fitted as standard equipment on a car designed and built to be ultra-quiet – the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class.
