Enriched Subaru Outback range for 2014

  •     An impressive model line-up consisting of Boxer® petrol and diesel variants
  •     Seamless and safe driving courtesy of Lineartronic™ CVT and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive™
  •     Three distinct models cater for on- and off-road adventure

Defining in large part the term ‘crossover’, the Subaru Outback is a vehicle which subscribes to the connotations of fusing the best attributes from various vehicles into one exceptionally practical package. While always being considered as one of the best, the new, enhanced Outback range is now more versatile than ever. All three Outback models feature traditional Boxer® engine power, Lineartronic™ Continuously Variable Transmission and Subaru’s trademark Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive™ for the ultimate mix of driving comfort, off-road ability and balanced power delivery.

Highlights in the range include the Outback Diesel CVT which features the world’s only Boxer® diesel engine, and the new Outback 2.5i-S with a sporty look and classy appeal. Taking the Subaru brand slogan of ‘Confidence in Motion’ to a new level, the Subaru Outback range embodies the brand’s most prominent attributes and presents them in attractive, well-priced and ultimately capable packages.

Ashley Lazarus, Marketing Manager at Subaru Southern Africa, says: “The Subaru brand is associated with versatility, amongst many others attributes, and as such offers a range of vehicles as unique as they are capable. The Outback range is an example of our brand’s breadth of ability. The three distinct models manage a difficult feat by not only being capable off-road machines but also ideal city cruisers, making the Outback the ultimate urban adventure vehicle”.

The Outback’s all-encompassing ability is personified by the Boxer® engine range. The horizontally-opposed punching action portrayed by the pistons, which gives the engine line-up its ‘boxer’ nomenclature, also means that the engine itself is flat and can therefore be mounted lower-down in the engine bay, which in turn leads to a lower centre of gravity and more dynamic handling. When coupled with the superb Lineartronic™ CVT, the Boxer® engine comes into its own, allowing for effortless progress while realising good fuel economy and providing for a truly relaxing drive.

The low placement of the engine also means that even with 213mm of ground clearance, the Outback still maintains the dynamic on-road verve associated with a brand with such a rich motorsport heritage. Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive™ system takes dynamic handling a step further, adding to on-road driving safety and dynamics while allowing the Outback to be taken off-road where the balanced all-wheel drive system allows for more than just dirt road driving to be included in the Outback’s list of off-road capabilities.

Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium Lineartronic™

Setting the tone for the Subaru Outback range, the Outback 2.5i Premium Lineartronic™ is the first of the three models. With proven all-terrain credentials and a famous naturally aspirated Boxer® power plant (123 kW and 229 Nm) coupled to Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive™, the Outback 2.5i features rugged styling, a practical interior, raised ride height and the superbly smooth Lineartronic™ CVT.

Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, hard-wearing bumpers and side sills, a sunroof, roof rails, ambient cabin lighting, leather upholstery, dual zone climate control, cruise control, a rear-view camera, an electric driver’s seat with memory, a premium 6-speaker sound system with MP3/CD/AUX/USB compatibility and Bluetooth.

New Subaru Outback 2.5i-S Premium Lineartronic™

Building on the versatile and capable tone set by the Outback 2.5i, the new Outback 2.5i-S Premium Lineartronic™ realises urban adventure while still exhibiting the important crossover values implied by the Outback badge. With ride height and practicality intact, the sporty model in the range features a number of visual enhancements which lend it a classy look and feel. Featuring the same drivetrain as the 2.5i as well, its urban adventurer looks point towards city-bound exploration, while off-road excursions are still part of its arsenal of abilities.

Colour coding all-round gives the 2.5i-S a more powerful stance, the front being augmented by dark-painted headlight clusters and a black radiator grille with a strong chrome accent imparting power and aggression. Eighteen-inch gunmetal alloy wheels also increase visual appeal, the look being completed by the silver-painted roof rails. Feature upgrades to go with the Sport nomenclature on the inside include carbon-like interior trim and sports alloy pedals.

Robust Outback 2.0D Premium Lineartronic™

Featuring the only Boxer® diesel engine in the world, the Subaru Outback Diesel CVT really is all things to all men. The low-down torque profile of the turbocharged diesel motor (350 Nm from just 1 800 rpm) means the Lineartronic™ transmission turns the driving experience into an economical and comfortable event – the Subaru Outback Diesel CVT sips just 6.5-litres of 50 ppm diesel per 100 km on the combined cycle, and that while still providing for athletic acceleration and enveloping the driver in the characteristic burble so strongly associated with Boxer® engines.

Subscribing too to the inherent value proposition connoted by the Subaru badge, the range-topping diesel model features specification advantages which include dark-painted 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and push-button starting, innovative roof rails which feature built-in cross-bars which can be easily folded across the roof for fitment of a bike rack or roof storage box, contrasting black-painted side skirts and bumper edges and a striking intercooler scoop on the bonnet, along with dark-painted xenon headlight clusters and a black-painted grille.

Safety still top priority for Outback range

Complementing the high specification levels and across-the-board versatility of the Outback range, safety remains the one element of any Subaru which is most proudly expressed. All Outback models feature Subaru’s Ring-Shaped Reinforcement™ along with seven airbags (driver’s knee included), seat belt warning buzzers for all five seats, a collapsible brake pedal, ISOFIX child seat anchor points and whiplash-reducing seats. The Outback’s 5-star ANCAP and Euro NCAP safety ratings were also achieved thanks to a host of electronic aids which include ABS, EBD, BAS, VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) and traction control. The Subaru Outback also received the IIHS Top Safety Pick award, something it shares with the rest of the Subaru product offering.

All Subaru Outback models come standard with a 3-year/ 100 000 km warranty. Both 2.5-litre petrol models feature a 3-year/ 75 000 km maintenance plan, the Diesel CVT featuring a 3-year/ 60 000 km maintenance plan.
