Classic cars and classic aircraft get together at Swartkop Air Force Base, Pretoria

What a get-together!  Classic cars and classic aircraft assembled at the Swartkop Air Force Base in Pretoria 04 July 2015, enjoyed by those who appreciate both types of vehicle.  The car owner’s clubs present were mainly Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, with a few cars from MG too.

The biggest attendance was by Mercedes-Benz, displaying cars from the 1950s to the latest, as varied as the classic rounded 190 sedan to a few S-Classes of different generations, classy coupés such as the rare simple-style 280 CE and 500 SEC, and of course a delicious selection of SL cars, including a surprisingly large count of the first 500 SL present.

Porsche owners had a sporty line-up showing their proud heritage with a few Porsche 356 cars, Porsche 928, and of course the iconic Porsche 911 shown, including revered collectables like the original 911 turbo, 911 SC and 911 targa.

Classic aircraft included the unmistakable Harvard in its metal silver and orange paintwork doing some thunderous fly-by displays, while the Puma helicopter in SA Army camouflage paint took some lucky visitors for a joy flight.  Some static displays included the Hercules freight carrier.  Inside the hangars visitors can view the museum items like the Vampire and Buccaneer.

On the hill in the background the tips of the South African Air Force Memorial building, shaped to resemble aeroplane wings, can be seen.

It was an event where engineering and proud history of both classic cars and classic aircraft was on display and in action.
