The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is designed to excell at everything, poised to challenge the world’s most advanced sports coupés, be it in acceleration, handling or braking.  Chevrolet is confident the Camaro is suitable for daily driving, with the highest technology levels and chassis damping, and can take on sports coupés at any price and in any setting.  Bold!

This car is American, so remember to say Zee L 1 (not Zet L 1).

Supercharged 6.2 V8 + 10-speed auto

Acceleration for the Camaro ZL1 is delivered from a supercharged 6.2L V8 engine, “estimated” at 477 kW and 868 Nm.  It is driven through either a 6-speed manual transmission with active rev-matching, or an all-new 10-speed (ten speed) automatic.

Designed for performance

The lightweight and stiffer structure of the sixth-Gen Camaro is where handling capability starts, continued with Magnetic Ride suspension and an electronic limited-slip differential. 

A suite of standard technologies tailors the Zee L 1 for street and track performance:  a Driver Mode Selector, Performance Traction Management, Custom Launch Control, 285/35 R20 front and 305/30 R20 Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tyres rear, 6-piston monobloc front Brembo brake calipers, and a dual-mode exhaust (not-so-loud and loud?).

The Camaro ZL1 form is defined by functionality – wind-tunnel tests and on-track validation was carried out to achieve aerodynamics and cooling for track use.  Its exterior elements play a part in managing airflow, under and through this high-performance Camaro.  From every angle these designed parts coalesce to give it a purposeful attitude – the new bonnet, for example, has a carbon fibre insert with heat extractor.

Inside, the Recaro sports seats, flat-bottom steering wheel and gear grip are all sueded… for the sports/race-car look and high-grip benefits.

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 coupé will be sold in the USA only, followed by the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 convertible to become available early 2017.  An open car for open track days.

Mustang, but no Camaro?

With the Ford Mustang being welcomed warmly and with open arms into South Africa (being right-hand drive build for the first time) will the Chevrolet Camaro also be made with the steering wheel this side?  There are no plans, sadly.
