BMW M5 “Pure Metal M5 Edition” – a metal-look special edition exclusively for South Africa
The BMW M5 was the first sedan from the BMW M stable in 1985. It quickly earned a reputation as a mid-size sedan with sports car performance. This year celebrates 30 years of the BMW M5.
Pure Metal M5 Edition
The Pure Metal M5 Edition is now made available in a special edition as its 30th anniversary, grouping together a selection of the best of M5.
Firstly, the name. While the BMW M5 can certainly be described as a sports sedan in the pure metal mould, the Pure Metal part in the name stems from the very rare paint – BMW Individual Pure Metal Silver is not plain silver, but rather a special-finish silver… as near as paint can probably get to look like pure metal. Its highly-reflective surface gives an almost chrome-like glisten, as seen in the accompanying image of the M5 Performance Package done in this special paint. The normal cost to have your BMW painted in this finish is a R 103 000 option.
Competition Package upgrade, plus even more power
BMW made available the Competition Package for BMW M5 and BMW M6 cars, to create the BMW M5 Competition Package and BMW M6 Competition Package. This package costs R 133 900 on the BMW M5, and includes a few racy items, like the M Driver’s Package which sees the car’s top speed ban lifted from 250 to 305km/h, revised chassis and lower suspension, Active M Differential, and more direct mapping (read dynamic, sporty) of the M-specific steering and the M Dynamic Mode of the Dynamic Stability Control.
A key number-sensitive ingredient is an engine kiloWatt upgrade from 412 to 423 on M5. The BMW M6s see a bigger hike, reaching 441kW and 700Nm. As part of the specialness, all Pure Metal M5 Edition cars will also get this 441kW output. This makes performance slice from 4.3 sec to 3.9 for the 0-100km/h dash.
Top-shelf options fitted
This is an M5 with plenty extra equipment and exclusivity, in celebration of 30 years of M5. So the options from the top shelf are hand-picked: M Carbon Ceramic Brakes (R 115 500) and, in pure M5 mould, the sedan is made to be fast… but also comfortable. The Pure Metal M5 Edition therefore adds full Merino leather on M multi-functional seats with lumbar support (usually a leather-lover’s option at R 84 100) in Black, customised with Silverstone (light grey-ish) contrast stitching.
Driving Assist (includes Lane Departure Warning and Approach Control Warning) and Comfort Access with smart opener are also standard-fit options.
Rather than the Competition Package's 7-spoke wheels, the Pure Metal M5 Edition gets the meaty-looking R 34 700 optional 5-double-spoke 20-inch wheel set.
"PURE METAL M5" numbered "1/20" plaques
To brand these special cars, each is adorned with interior "PURE METAL M5" numbered "1/20" plaques. Not to shout about it with brash colours or wheels or badges – just a stylish celebration. Special.
Exclusively for South Africa
Sure, the BMW M5 30 Jahre (30 Years) limited edition was made available in other markets, but South Africa gets this unique creation – only 20 of the BMW M5 Pure Metal M5 Edition cars will be created, exclusively for South Africa.
With the “standard” M5 at R 1 448 000 retail, the addition of the packages and options and the special paint (totaling about R470k) plus the unique trim elements add a cool round R500k to form a price of R 1 948 000.
