BMW Concept X2 – stretching the coupé-mixed-with-SUV idea into a new form

BMW Concept X2 – stretching the coupé-mixed-with-SUV idea into a new form

Author - Author

The BMW Concept X2 is a new addition to the compact segment, though rather than a mere scaled-down version like X6 was shrunk to X4, the X2 is a distinctive design that stands apart from that of the other BMW X models, and also draws on the BMW Group’s history of “coupé-making”.

Where X6 created BMW’s Sports Activity Coupé, the X2 is a compact concept “exuding urban sporting appeal”.

Design – a mix of classic cues and a new facet

The BMW Concept X2 combines the fast-moving body language and low-slung proportions of a coupé with the robust construction of an X model.  The X2 is a sporty vehicle with a bold character, and it allows BMW to open up some new design possibilities for the brand.  As such, this concept displays a new and exciting facet of the BMW brand within the compact segment.

The distinctive character of the BMW Concept X2 already shines through in the car’s proportions.  While its large wheels and familiar two-box design underline its functional BMW X model character, a long wheelbase, stretched roofline, short overhangs and heavily forward-slanting C-pillar give the body a sporty, low-to-the-road feel.

See the logo on the C-pillar?  It is a classically sporty coupé design cue straight out of the BMW history books, like on the BMW 3.0 CSL coupé.  This represents a singularly unmistakeable detail.

The large air-channelling roof spoiler lies flat over the blackened rear window, and as it extends from the C-pillars it gives the rear of the BMW Concept X2 its sporty contours.

Upside-down kidneys shark nose

The BMW trademark kidneys grille turns the familiar trapezoidal shape of BMW grilles on its head – these instead widen from top to bottom.  This clear statement therefore accentuates the standalone nature of the BMW Concept X2, as well as the width of the front and the car’s solid stance.

Graphically modelled and heavily angled bars within the kidney grille create an undeniable “shark nose” effect (think BMWs of the 70s and 80s, though not as sharply angled as its forebears) bringing additional depth and sculptural richness to this area of the car.

Will they build it… like this?

If recent BMW concept cars are a guide of how the concept will transform into production car, then, no – refer BMW Concept 4 Series and Concept X4, to name but 2 – these do not look anywhere near as exciting in the real world as they did in fantasy concept-car land.

Therefore, the Concept X2 production model will, in all likelihood, be watered down drastically – the boldness will be dried out.  Apart from the X2 concept car’s slivery door mirrors and door-handle-less doors, why can BMW not, for once, translate the concept car into one we can buy at a dealer?
