BMW Concept Compact Sedan – the perfect statement-maker
BMW Concept Compact Sedan – the perfect statement-maker
While Audi and Mercedes have been delivering strings of A3 Sedan and CLA, BMW has been losing out on the compact premium sedan sales boom, as it focuses on new segments like the 2 Series Active Tourer.
Now the BMW Concept Compact Sedan is showing the company’s interpretation of their competitor in this segment. While many buyers might be moving from large SUVs into smaller ones or cross-overs, those who want to scale down from their BMW 5 Series or BMW 3 Series sedan, and want to remain brand-loyal, have been left with no option, while buyers are moving into the A3 Sedan and CLA sedan with curved coupé roofline, or hotter S3 Sedan or Mercedes-AMG CLA45 choices.
Preview of 1 Series / 2 Series sedan?
This might be called BMW Concept Compact Sedan, but is this a preview of the BMW 1 Series sedan, or a precursor to the rumoured BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé. If BMW is going with the clumsy name like it did with 2 Series Active Tourer, could the name be BMW 2 Series Concept Compact Sedan? Hopefully something simpler will be used. Whatever the name, this is the car that will have many more people enter BMW ownership.
Injects new life into compact segment
The chief BMW designer says the reveal of this BMW Concept Compact Sedan shows the potential they see in a compact sedan, giving generous amounts of space within a compact area while providing the sporting ability expected from a BMW, and an elegance otherwise available in larger BMW sedans.
The characterful design embodies the driving pleasure offered by a sporting car with minimised exterior dimensions, making it distinctive and it “injects new life into the compact segment”.
The production car will be toned down, no doubt, as per previous BMW Concept cars, but the design in general is quite do-able as a compact sedan.
