BMW 430i and BMW 440i – prices+specs in South Africa for these new BMW names

Following the BMW 3 Series facelift in 2015, which saw the re-introduction of the BMW 330i badge and the replacement of the BMW 335i with an all-new BMW 340i name, the BMW 4 Series is now getting the same engine upgrade and rename treatment.

BMW 430i and BMW 440i – a pair of new BMW names

430i and 440i are a pair of new badges adorning the right-side BMW bootlids for the first time – just like 340i was new, there have not been any car before it with the name BMW 430i or BMW 440i.

Available in all 3 body styles:  BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, BMW 4 Series coupé and BMW 4 Series convertible

The new engines and names will be available in the same 3 body styles of the BMW 4 Series:

-    BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is the 5-door fastback style (a new body style first seen on 4 Series)
-    BMW 4 Series coupé (the one that used to be BMW 3 Series coupé)
-    BMW 4 Series convertible (the one that used to be BMW 3 Series convertible)


BMW 420i and 420d get upgraded engines as per 3 Series facelift

The BMW 420i and BMW 420d names remain unchanged, though these get upgraded engines as per the 3 Series facelift.

In the 420i, the new engine (the same as the BMW 320i from 2015 onwards) means the torque in the 420i manual models goes up from 270 to 290Nm, and stays unchanged with the automatic gearbox, while both benefit from an improvement in fuel consumption and emissions. 

The 420d gains the engine output increases from 135kW 380Nm to the new engine’s 140kW and 400Nm as did the BMW 320d, with a big improvement on an already highly-efficient engine:  the BMW 420d coupé auto and BMW 420d Gran Coupé auto drop from 4.6 l/100km with 121 g/km emissions to a city-car-beating 4.0 (just 4 litres) and 106.

For 430i and 440i, the new badges are not just a name change, but introduce the engine changes introduced in the BMW 3 Series facelift last year.

Before BMW fans get too excited – the “30i” does not bring back the 3.0 6-cylinder from the E46 330i / E90 330i, but is still the 2.0 4-cylinder turbo as dictated by modern efficiency compliance… though if you want the straight-6 personality and power, you can still get the 3.0 inline-six turbo in the BMWs with the “40i” badges.

The BMW 428i becomes BMW 430i.  The two-litre turbo nudges up from 180kW to 185, while torque stays at 350Nm, though increased efficiency sees the previous 428i models with manual improve by half-a-litre per 100km, while the automatics improve from the BMW 428i Gran Coupé auto / BMW 428i coupé auto 6.3 l/100km to 5.5 l/100km quoted for the BMW 430i Gran Coupé auto / BMW 430i coupé auto, while the heavier folding-hardtop-bodied 428i convertible and new BMW 430i convertible compared show a reduction with auto ‘box from 6.6 to 5.9.

The top-of-the-range BMW 4 Series swops 435i for 440i.  The successful 3-litre turbo gains power, torque and efficiency – where the engine in the BMW 435i made 225kW and 400Nm, the BMW 440i engine is now rated at 240kW and has 450Nm.  The acceleration off the line is now 5.0 instead of 5.1, which may seem like a small gain, but the in-gear times are (and feel) quicker. 

Unbelievably, this jewel of an engine is now even smoothe… plus, despite already being very efficient for the performance it gives, further limits the fuel usage from an average mid-7s to 6.6 l/100km for the BMW 440i Gran Coupé and BMW 440i coupé, and 6.8 for the BMW 440i convertible.
