The latest in the line of BMW Hommage concept cars arrives in the year of BMW’s 100 years of existence.
The BMW 2002 Hommage concept raises a glass to the BMW 2002 turbo from 50 years ago, when the BMW 02 range kick-started an era of success for BMW cars. This compact coupé is one of the cornerstone cars which made BMW the esteemed car company it is today.
The 2002 sat at the top of the range, and was the first series-produced car anywhere in Europe to have turbo technology. “That set the seal on the coupé as a genuine sports car”, BMW says.
BMW as the first compact sports coupé with turbo engine, which was unheard of in its day (putting a turbo engine in a small light car).
Historic details with a modern twist
The BMW 2002 Hommage concept has a sporting silhouette which sits low against the road. With compact proportions, long wheelbase (relative to the body), short overhangs and prominent “shark nose” (a classic BMW front styling trademark), promise a driving experience that thrills with irresistible dynamics and agility.
Aerodynamic details like the oversize spoilers front and rear team up with the profusion of air intakes to optimise airflow around the car, to maximise downforce in every driving situation.
Inspired by the signature chrome strip that ringed the BMW ‘02 in its day, a horizontal
carbon band wraps itself around the shoulderline of the BMW 2002 Hommage, splitting the body visually into separate sections.
The blue-grey paintwork is named “Space Race Metal” in both its matt and gloss form, where the light metallic blue finish changes in appearance from a brightly fluorescent blue to grey depending on the incidence of light. As a result, the car’s whole body “brims with power and energy”.
The headlights are bordered by reflectors, whose gold colouring is a pointer to the “golden” 50th anniversary of the BMW 2002’s launch, and also looks old-school. The form of the rear lights is inspired by the same historical blueprint.
Pick out the turn signal repeaters, which – like those of the car’s forebear – are located separately from the headlights, embedded into a full-width strip above these, finished in carbon on this BMW Hommage.
The BMW Motorsport livery of the front apron and its “turbo” lettering in mirror
writing is reminiscent of the original decals of the BMW 2002 turbo.
Inspired by the BMW 2002 turbo and looking like it could be based on a mix of 1 Series M Coupé and BMW M2 coupé, it would be so exciting if BMW could actually turn this concept into a showroom car.
