The Safari has been in production since 1998 and was the first SUV to be designed, developed and manufactured in India. The second and current generation Safari was launched in 2012 and is now known as the Safari Storme. It is based on the Tata Aria platform and has a stronger chassis. From its original 2.0-litre turbo diesel, the Safari Storme now runs on a Common Rail Direct Injection 2.2-litre 16 valve DOHC "VariCOR" diesel engine with Variable Turbine Technology(VTT). In 2015, the model was facelifted – the interior was improved on, in addition to gaining an increase in output.
