The mid-size crossover has been in production since 2001. The Outlander was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek upon its introduction in Japan. It was based on the Mitsubishi ASX (Active Sports Crossover) concept car. It has survived three design generations. Newer models have a lightweight body, as compared to the first models, and make extensive use of high tensile strength steel. Models are also filled and available with many driver assist systems such as the Forward Collision Mitigation system, Lane departure warning system, and adaptive cruise control. In addition to its safety elements there is also a driver knee airbag that assists to reduce leg injury in a collision.
