Twingo GT is a GT city car

Combining a 81kW petrol engine, manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive sees Renault propose an unprecedented package in the modern city car – the Renault Twingo GT.

Rear-wheel-drive rear-engine city car

The new Renault Twingo is a rear-wheel drive city car.  While the previous front-wheel drive Twingo was available in South Africa from 2008 to 2013, the new rear-wheel drive Twingo III is not imported here.  The sportiest Twingo we had in SA was the Renault Twingo RS Gordini (in the typical bright blue metallic with white sports stripes).

The new smart forfour (launched here earlier in 2016) is the co-developed car you can buy here, sharing the rear-wheel drive rear-engine layout.

Twingo GT using RS

The Renault Twingo GT uses Renault Sport’s (RS) expertise to deliver even more driving pleasure.  Its 898cc Energy TCe turbo engine (we’ll know it from the Sandero, Clio and Captur) has been boosted from 66/70kW to 81kW and 170Nm torque.  Different gearing further contributes to the Twingo GT’s sprightly and free-revving performance.

To take advantage of this performance boost in total safety, the Twingo GT’s chassis features revised suspension, specific ESP calibration and variable-rate steering.  The result is sharp handling and responsive steering feedback for precise cornering and outstanding road holding. These features combine to provide drivers of the Twingo GT with affordable driving pleasure.

Look by Twin’Run concept car, with NACA aircraft graphics

The Renault Twingo GT’s sporty credentials are visible at first glance in the 17-inch wheels, side air intakes, twin exhaust (wheelbarrow handle style), this new orange body colour (seen in these images) along with orange trim details in the cabin, Renault Sport-badged doorsills, aluminium pedals and an alloy gear knob.

The Twingo III’s lines, which drew their inspiration from the Twin’Run concept car, combine perfectly with the Twingo GT’s specific wheel design, and lowered ride height and NACA aircraft graphics (a tribute to the wings of the famous American plane).

The Twingo GT reminds of the now-collectable Renault 5 Turbo, which was a city car with boosted power and looks.
