Is the Renault Captur good for families? Here’s our verdict.
By Farzana Chaumoo
The Renault Captur is a stylish, safe and spacious crossover that is great for family-weekend adventures, relaxing holidays and even for just the daily commute to school and/or work. Let's take a closer look at what it offers for a family.
Storage Space
In the Captur, you can expect to find similar storage space as in a family hatchback like the Renault Megane or Toyota Auris. But the Captur has a storage party trick - you can slide the rear seats back and forth (about 16cm) to adjust passenger or luggage space to suit your needs. There’s also an additional storage compartment under the boot floor which can fit a space saver spare tyre. The boot is sufficiently large when compared to rivals and offers a capacity of 377 litres. Furthermore, you won't have to break your back getting things in or out of the boot as the loading bay is high so no need for bending. The cabin is also quite roomy.
Is it baby-friendly?
The rear door length is smaller than some family hatchbacks but seating is quite high so it allows parents easy entrance and exit with babies. Three ISOFIX 3-point child seat anchor seat attachments are fitted to the front passenger and rear side seats. Between the two baby seats on the back seat, another small child can still fit in between the two. Without the baby seats, three adults or children will fit comfortably. With the sliding rear bench, parents can also reach their babies/children easier from the front seats.
Is parking easy?
This is a popular question for many mothers. The Captur has a high driving position, and with its large mirrors and short body length, you can easily park into tight spaces with no hassle. Since the rear pillars are thick and can obstruct full vision, the crossover's rear parking sensors will pick up what you can't see, making parking easier.
How does it drive?
In Ané Theron's review of the Renault Captur 66kW 1.5 dCi Dynamique, she describes the crossover as a "superstar when it comes to fuel economy", it has decent refinement in terms of road and wind noise, a pliant suspension and secure handling.
Safety
Renault's Captur has achieved a top 5-Star Euro NCAP rating in 2013 with a 79% child safety score. It also scored the full twelve marks available for protection of an eighteen-month-old child in a baby seat.
Standard passive safety features include high-efficiency front airbags, head/chest side bags, seat belts with pretensioners and force limiters (front seats), anti-whiplash headrests and force limiter function (rear side seats).
Other safety systems include Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) coupled with Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) that kicks in and automatically applies maximum brake pressure when an emergency braking situation is detected by excessive brake force, and is able to shorten braking distance by up to nine metres. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) ensures vehicle stability and assists the driver to avoid possible loss of control resulting from excessive speed or slippery road conditions. It detects and reduces loss of traction, reduces engine power and brakes on independent wheels in the event of loss of control. Hill Start Assist (HSA) is automatically activated (upon complete stop) as soon as an incline of at least 10% is detected. The system is engaged by stepping firmly on the brake and prevents any backward movement long enough for pull off without requiring the use of the handbrake. When stepping off the brake, the car will hold for approximately three seconds to allow pull off with no roll-back.
